Chapter Two

Beau and Diego were driven to an underground warehouse they’d never been to before, but it looked like it belonged to the CIA, with a variety of vehicles and people standing around. A few guys they knew waved at them.

“This way, please.” Nick, the man who had brought them to the place, indicated a corner of the room.

Beau and Diego walked behind the man to a large gray SUV, where several people were standing around.

“Sir, these are the men the director sent.”

A large, intimidating man turned and looked both up and down. The frown on his face indicated he wasn’t happy with what he saw.

Too fucking bad, Diego thought.

He held out a hand. “I’m Finn, Jayla’s head of security, and have been for some time.”

They shook hands.

“I understand why the director is doing this, but I’m not happy about it,” Finn said.

“Understood,” Beau said and nodded.

Finn handed over several papers. “These are the instructions for her aftercare. She’s doing amazingly well, but I didn’t expect anything less from her.

She’s sleeping because of a pain med they gave her.

She didn’t want it, but she needed to ride comfortably in the back.

The bag the director sent is with your guys. So, I guess that’s it.”

Finn held out a hand. “I will always be grateful to you both if you take care of her. If she gets hurt, expect me on your doorstep.” The man turned after the handshakes and walked off.

A young man walked up to them. “Sirs, here you go,” he said, handing them the keys. “Drive out the south entrance and head east for a bit. We’ve got people along the route watching for tails. Any questions?”

Beau shook his head. “No. We got it.” He turned to Diego. “You driving, or am I?”

Diego snatched the keys from his hands and snorted. “I’d like to be alive to see tomorrow if you don’t mind.”

Beau chuckled and waited for Diego to get in the other side. “I can’t believe what a chicken shit you are when it comes to my driving.”

Diego drove out of the massive underground room and headed east. “It’s because you’re a maniac.”

Beau rolled his eyes. He waited until they were out of the city before turning around to check their mission for who knew how long.

There wasn’t much to see. The girl was wrapped in a blanket and had a hoodie pulled over her head.

Jesus, he was sweating, and she looked like she was freezing.

Her skin was a light tan, and her hands were tiny.

Beau turned back around.

“Well?”

“I can’t see much. She’s covered from head to toe. She’s on the small side.”

Diego shrugged. “Maybe she’s not done growing.”

“Maybe.” He undid the tie on the folder the director had given them and pulled the papers out.

He went through them quickly and found the directions to a cabin in the middle of nowhere.

A GPS couldn’t even find it. They had enough food for a few days, but then one would have to go into the nearest town for supplies.

Beau shook the envelope, and blocks of twenty-dollar bills fell out. There had to be at least $5,000 there.

Diego glanced over. “Shit. That’ll get us by for a while,” he said sarcastically.

“Yeah, I think so, too.”

“How far do we have to go?”

Beau looked at the map for a bit. “It looks like it’s not far. The cabin is deep in the Shenandoah National Park. About three hours. It’ll take us an hour and a half to get to the park, maybe longer if we take back roads.”

Beau settled back in his seat and looked out the window. He thought about taking a nap, but wanted to be alert for any trouble they might encounter.

Fuck, when he and Diego came home from the last mission, they had been at a loss as to what step to take.

They didn’t want to go back to any hellhole.

They’d had enough violence to last the rest of their lives, but they frankly didn’t know how to live a normal life.

It had been too many years since seeing the worst of people, and “normal” wasn’t a word he could use anymore.

This assignment might turn out to be a godsend. It would give them time to come up with a plan.

Beau kept glancing out the rearview mirror but hadn’t seen anything suspicious, so he relaxed. He wouldn’t let his guard down, though. Hell, he didn’t know if that was even possible. Could he and Diego live a relatively normal life? He’d have to wait and see.
