CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN
Beckett
T WO DAYS IN THE HOSPITAL , and I’m going stir crazy. The babies were allowed to leave this morning, but Onyx hasn’t been discharged yet. The hospital carried out a paternity test on the babies and it turns out I'm our girl’s dad and Kenan is our boy’s dad. I had a feeling when I saw her face on the ultrasound screen, that jolt I felt was pure love. “How much longer before the doctor comes back?” Kenan growls at the nurses station.
It has been nothing but a giant waste of time, waiting, always waiting. We have a doctor on staff at the house and they refuse to let us leave and sign her over to his care.
“It should be another hour or so.” The nurse says.
“You said that two fucking hours ago!” His fist hits the counter and makes the woman jump. “We’re not leaving with our babies and not our wife.”
“Calm down. She can’t make him come here any quicker.”
“Everyone except the fucking surgeon signed off on her leaving.” That damn surgeon has refused to come by when Kenan is here, I’m not sure what happened in the room with them, but Kenan is livid. “Call him down here now.”
The nurse picks up the phone and dials. “Hello, Doctor. Mr. Mazitti is requesting you to sign off on his wife’s discharge papers.”
“Give me the phone.” Kenan growls and before I can stop him, he’s snatching it out of her hand. “Hey, asshole. Come sign these fucking papers so I can take her home, or I’ll bring my mother down here.”
Oh shit. He’s threatening to use his mother, he’s really fucking done. I probably shouldn’t mention to him that the very doctor he’s yelling at used to be one of Onyx’s clients. Apparently he liked to be tied down and called a bad boy. I laughed when Onyx told me after he left the room one of the times he checked on her belly.
“Thank you.” Kenan says, handing the phone back to the nurse. “He’ll be here in twenty.” Kenan sighs, turning to go back into the room.
“You know, for someone who submits to Onyx, you really know how to control a fucking room.” I say playfully.
“Be careful pup, or I’ll bend you over the fucking chair in there.” He warns. He’s a little pent up since Onyx was put on bed-rest two weeks ago. We focused all of our time on her that we sort of forgot to take care of ourselves and it’s starting to show for him.
“Don’t threaten me with a good time.” I laugh, pushing the door open to her room. Onyx is still asleep, with the two baby bassinets next to her bed.
Those twenty minutes are agonizing as Kenan paces, when the door opens and Doctor Bad Boy walks through, Kenan sighs, “Finally. Sign the fucking papers so we can go home.”
“I have to check once more before I approve her leaving.”
“We have a doctor on staff, just sign the fucking papers.”
“Kenan. He has a job to do.” I snap at him. It’s not often that I say things out of anger, but he’s putting me on the edge of insanity and I’m not sure how much longer I can handle being here.
“Fine. Hurry up.” Kenan plops down onto the couch next to me as the doctor does his job, talking to Onyx while he looks over the incision.
After five more minutes, he’s removing his gloves and typing on the computer next to the bed. “The nurse will have everything ready for you to go in a few, if anything gets worse, call me. I’ll come to the house if I have to. I don’t want some washed up old man fucking up my perfect work.”
Oh, he’s cocky. I sort of like that about him, but he’s been with our girl, and if it’s not medically needed then he won’t touch her again. “Thank you Vic, but I’m ready to go home with my babies.” Onyx smiles over at us and then looks at the babies, not even bothering to look at the doctor. As if he’s the least important person in the world.
“Thank fuck.” Kenan breathes out as Vic starts to leave the room. I watch as he looks at her and she’s so consumed with our babies that she doesn’t notice him and it almost hurts him. I know the pain my guy, but it’s time for you to go. He looks at me and I raise my brows, nodding for him to leave, because he doesn’t want Kenan to spot him looking at our girl.
Once we’re home with our babies, Kenan helps Onyx up to the room while Candace and I carry the babies up. I can’t wait to see what happens now that they’re here.
I have a daughter and a son, one of each, at the same time. Everything is going to change and I hope it’s for the better. Candace paces the room, talking to our son as I hold our little girl. “What are their names?” She asks.
“We want to tell everyone at the same time.” Onyx says as she slides down the bed.
“Oh come on, Grandma can’t know first?” She smiles over at Onyx, who rolls her eyes.
“Fine, Grandma.” I watch as a light flickers across her eyes. She’s excited to tell them the names and it’s been killing her to not say anything, especially since she and Candace seem to have gotten to know each other really well these last two months. They have had so many meetings, and I know they’re keeping something from us, but Onyx said in time, she’d tell us what was happening.
Apparently, when we agreed to be her’s, that meant in every aspect, and she seems to be in charge of it all. What we do, when we do it. It’s kind of like having a prison warden instead of a wife. But, I’ve chalked that up to her pregnancy.
“Well?” Candace sits on the edge of the bed and looks at our wife, waiting for the names to be spilled from her lips.
“Candace, I’d like you to meet Ryder Lee Mazitti and his twin sister Scarlett Alexandria Mazitti.” When I tell you that I have never in my life seen Candace shed a single tear, I fucking mean it. I never thought that woman would cry, but as she holds our son and looks at Onyx, I see a tear fall down her cheek.
The pride on her face is awkwardly comforting. I’ve seen her disappointed with Kenan for so long that watching Candace coo over the baby is weird. This is weird.
“I’ll take him.” Kenan says, pulling Ryder out of her arms.
“Then you better hand me Scarlett.” Candace looks at me, and I can’t help it. I pass my daughter to her without even thinking.
“So what’s the plan now that we’re home?” Kenan asks, rocking the baby in his arms.
“I figured we’d let me heal and after that we’d get back to life.” Onyx shrugs, “Whatever that means.” A smile lights up her face when she says that, and now I know she’s keeping secrets.
I lean over and press my lips to hers, “You’re keeping secrets.” I whisper against her cheek.
She winks at me when I stand up, “You’ll know as soon as I can get up and do all the things.”
“How long will that take?” Kenan asks.
“Doctor said a few months to be sure.” Onyx yawns, then hisses as she moves down the bed to lay down.
“Then we’ll tell them when you’re healed.” Candace says, standing up to hand me my baby. “For now, enjoy time with your little family.” She gives me a quick hug, turns to hug Kenan and then leaves the room, making both Kenan and I turn to look at Onyx.
“Let it be for now.” She waves a hand, “For now, bring those babies over here.” She pats the bed and our little family sits together for the first time in our room.
