VELAKOR EXCERPT

Whatever creature had attacked Bresis in that intermediary realm had followed her here—and might be hunting for her.

She’d experienced its strength before and she knew how mighty it was. That only made her more terrified.

“Are you alright?” Thorn asked as he led her to her room.

Aethon had excused himself the moment they’d arrived at the palace, citing some urgent matters. That left the two of them alone as they found their way back to their wing of the palace.

“I’m not sure. You saw it, didn’t you?”

Thorn nodded grimly.

“Do you think—”

Thorn pressed his lips together.

As they got to her room, she quickly closed the door and dumped her shopping bags on the floor.

“It was him. It was Velakor. He’s a bloody dragon, Thorn! You asked me to seduce a bloody dragon that tried to kill me.”

“Let’s not make it sound so bad—”

“Bad? Try worse! He tried to actually kill me. He would have succeeded, too, if he’d had a few more seconds.”

“So? All right. He is a dragon, which I’ve heard are very rare. But on the bright side, dragons are very possessive when it comes to things they consider theirs.”

“Thorn!” She swiveled and almost punched him. “I don’t want that bloody dragon to think I’m his.”

“Why? That would solve everything.”

“Yes, it would end up with my death.”

“I thought you weren’t afraid of death?” He raised a brow.

“Any death but that at his hands. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction,” she grumbled.

“Then make him want you in his bed, not in the grave.”

“Are you hearing yourself?” She blinked. “No. I’m not doing it. We have to find a different way. I’m not going anywhere near that creature.”

“I think you’ve gotten under his skin more than you realize. Why else would he have reacted like that?”

“Who knows? Maybe I irritated his airways so badly he started breathing fire,” she retorted with a roll of her eyes.

“We have a plan, Bresis.”

“We need a feasible plan, Thorn. For now, let’s pause on Velakor and focus on everything else. Perhaps I can still get Aethon to… I don’t know, not dislike us as much.”

“Sure, sure. Sleep on it and we’ll talk tomorrow before the Summit.”

He turned to leave.

“You didn’t tell me how it went with the High Priestess.”

He stopped at the door. His tongue clicked against teeth.

“It…went.”

He didn’t elaborate. He just left.

“Agh!” Bresis yelled in frustration.
