Chapter 10 #3

“We both have.” She pulled away and began setting things out for dinner.

They usually ate in the kitchen on nights that the cook was off, and tonight was no different.

She was getting out the stuff to make herself some dinner when he sat down on one of the stools that surrounded the kitchen table.

“I discovered something today. I have a lot more magic than I did before. Nothing that I can see a huge use for, but enough that I can will myself from room to room. That’s all I’ve practiced with, is from room to room, but I wonder how far I can go with it.

How far can you go when you travel by magic? ”

“As far as I want, I guess. I never really gave it any thought. I just want to be someplace, and I use my magic to will myself there.” He did think about it then.

“I’ve been to different countries, so I think it’s safe to say that I can go anywhere I wish.

We’ll have to practice to see how far you can go. ”

“I’d like that. Also, I can touch someone now and tell what they are.

The man who’s been going around town trying to buy up property is half human and half wolf.

I thought there was some rule about having to report to the alpha around the town that you’re in.

” He said he might not know that he’s half wolf.

“Good point. I didn’t know that I had a vampire in my family.

How can you find out? He has a bit of magic that he’s aware of.

I guess that’s why I figured that he knew. ”

“Conri will be able to tell. I’ll let him know that one of his kind is causing some trouble and see if he wants anything to do with it.

Conri’s a good man, and I’ve heard that he’s found his mate.

That’ll be good for him and his brothers if they start to have their own halves come to them.

They’re as old as we are.” She poured her hot soup into the bowl and got herself some crackers.

He noticed that she brought them to herself with magic, and he thought that was wonderful.

Sirous watched as she ate a few sips of her hot soup.

“I have gone over the banking statements that the banker told me to do. Nothing seems out of the ordinary to me. How about if you have a look with fresh eyes and tell me what it is he sees? He seems to think that we’re losing money in a couple of investments.

That’s normal, I think, but I don’t want to get too far behind on them. ”

“Did I tell you that I got the check from the burin today? It was for quite a bit of money. I had no idea that the man was worth that much.” He said that he’d been investing well before he’d been killed, and they’d been surprised by the amount as well.

“I’m going to put it in the bank and not touch it.

We might want to take a vacation someday, and that will be good for it. Do you have a lot of money?”

“We do have a great deal of money.” He watched as she licked her lips free of the soup she was having and had to think about what he’d been saying.

“Billions and billions of dollars in cash that is stashed around. Then there is land and homes. We own one in every country. You’ll have to remember that I’ve been around for a long time before cities started to pop up, and I’ve held onto it throughout the years. ”

“I do forget about that at times. You don’t look older than me, but I know that you are.

Brew’s mother is even older than you guys are, and I find that hard to believe as well.

” She finished her dinner and put her bowl and spoon in the sink.

“I have a book that I want to finish up if you’re finished in here. ”

“We’ll retire to the living room then.” As they settled on the couch, he thought about what they’d been talking about earlier about making love so much.

He would admit that he wanted her even now, but he was just noticing the dark shadows under her eyes.

And her skin was a little pale. He wasn’t going to take all the blame, but most of it he could.

“Is there anything on the television that you’d like to watch?

I will confess that I’ve not watched it overly much in the last couple of decades.

I don’t believe that I’ve even been to a movie house either in that long. ”

They had a good time running through the stations on it, only to find there was nothing either of them wanted to watch. He’d heard that said before. Hundreds of stations, but nothing you wanted to pause on to watch. Sirous didn’t mind turning it off. A book would do him better in the long run.

Just as he was ready to get up and use the bathroom, he noticed that Tabitha had fallen asleep with the book on her chest. He didn’t want to move as they were foot to foot on the couch.

Just watching her sleep had him feeling guilty again, and he got up without disturbing her.

When he returned, she was still resting but in a different position.

Covering her up against the chill of the air conditioning, he decided that if she was asleep in an hour, he would take her to their bed and hope that she’d sleep all night. She needed it a great deal.

At eleven-thirty, he’d put Tabitha to bed hours ago; he was finished looking over the paperwork about an investment that he was thinking about investing in.

It was something that he had planned on looking over tomorrow, but he had time now and finished it up.

He wasn’t going to invest in it at this time, but he would keep an eye on it.

It had potential, but the company was struggling to make deadlines now, and investing in it would be like pouring money into a pit. Nothing would come of it.

As he made his way up to their bedroom after locking up the house, he thought about how he’d found his mate so easily and hoped it would be the same for the others.

He had to believe that she was out there for each of them because if he didn’t, all he could think about was how lonely they’d be. Especially Rance and Rutger.

They’re parents had died when they were very young, and they’d been raised by another older couple. They didn’t have anyone who loved them, not like he and Brew did with their parents, having lived for so long after they were born. If anyone deserved happiness and love, it would be the two of them.

Crawling into bed with Tabitha, she rolled over to wrap herself around him.

She still had not stirred, and he knew then how much she’d needed the rest. After settling down in the covers, he held her to him and waited for sleep to take him.

Sometimes he’d be so tired when he went to bed that he couldn’t sleep, and tonight seemed to have been one of those nights.

He didn’t really need to rest as much as his Tabitha did, so he was content to hold her.

“Oh my darling, I love you.” He whispered to her gently, then kissed her on her cheek. “You’ve given me so much, and I fear that I’ve not given you much in return. I’m going to make it up to you as soon as tomorrow.”

The first thing he was going to do was to plan a long vacation for just the two of them.

They’d see the world one country at a time and enjoy that for a change.

Yes, he thought, that was just what they needed.

Time away from the little town and get out into much larger cities where they could be lost to the world.
