The lapwings are rising, zigzagging crazily, black and white against the sky, with a glint of jade that flashes as fast as the birds fly. Far below, a marsh harrier skims the reedbeds, wings wide, back arched, searching for prey. At this time of year, young birds are always the most vulnerable.
