Skull

Age Thirteen

We stand in front of our foster home, watching the flames burn away all the awful memories it held. My twin stands right next to me.

“They won’t hurt anyone again,” I rasp, turning my head to look at him. I’m older, only by a few minutes, but sometimes those minutes feel like years. I’ve done everything I can to try to make sure Nate has a childhood. I’ve shielded him as much as I possibly could and tried to protect him.

One of us deserves to be happy.

“What do we do now, Nix?” he asks me, crossing his arms over his chest. “They’ll put us in a group home.”

Ever since our parents died in a car crash when we were eight, we’ve been in the system.

The day they died is the day we lost everything.

We’ve just been surviving ever since.

I don’t remember much from before the crash, but I do remember feeling loved.

We were loved once, but now we are nothing but trouble. Unwanted. So easily discarded. Moved around and forgotten about.

Every single time they’ve tried to separate us, we’ve run away and found our way back to each other. I’d rather be on the street, homeless with my brother, than in a fancy house without him.

“Let’s go,” I decide, picking up my backpack. “We can move somewhere else, start fresh.”

With our last bit of money, we go to the bus station and buy two tickets for the next departing bus.

Guess we’re moving to Rest Falls.
