Chapter 16 Summer Heat #2

Ryan stretched out on the grass.

"This is nice."

Ethan sat beside him.

"It is."

Ryan looked at him.

Ethan was wearing a loose T-shirt and shorts. His hair was slightly messy from the heat, and there was already a light sheen of sweat across his forehead.

Ryan smiled.

Ethan noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You keep looking at me."

"I like looking at you."

Ethan's cheeks warmed.

"That's not nothing."

Ryan laughed.

"Okay. You're right."

Ethan looked away, smiling.

Ryan loved moments like this.

There was no tension.

No need to monitor every word.

No need to wonder whether someone might walk past and recognize them.

They could simply exist together.

After a while, they opened the snacks.

Ethan stole one of Ryan's chips.

Ryan immediately protested.

"That was mine."

"You brought them."

"For me."

"You brought them for us."

"That's not what you said earlier."

Ethan laughed.

"You'll survive."

Ryan shook his head.

"You're becoming a terrible boyfriend."

"Maybe."

Ethan smiled.

Ryan couldn't stop smiling either.

They spent the afternoon talking about ordinary things.

Their classes.

Their plans after graduation.

The places they wanted to visit.

The jobs they hoped to find.

The possibility of getting an apartment together someday.

That last subject made Ethan quiet.

Ryan looked at him.

"What?"

Ethan smiled.

"Nothing."

"You're thinking."

"I was imagining it."

"What?"

"Us having our own place."

Ryan smiled.

"With working air-conditioning."

"Absolutely."

"And a freezer full of ice packs."

Ethan laughed.

"And a ridiculous number of fans."

"Three."

"Five."

"Four."

"Deal."

They laughed.

Ryan looked at Ethan again.

There was something different about him.

It wasn't dramatic.

It was subtle.

Ethan wasn't constantly adjusting his shirt.

He wasn't checking his reflection in his phone.

He wasn't looking around to see whether anyone was reacting to him.

He was simply there.

Relaxed.

Ryan remembered the first weeks they had known each other.

Ethan had been careful about everything.

Where he sat.

How close he stood.

How long he stayed in one place.

Whether his clothes were dry.

Whether Ryan noticed.

Now Ethan was stretched out beside him, his arm resting loosely against Ryan's.

The change made Ryan feel proud.

Not because Ethan had become less sensitive.

Because he had stopped treating himself like a problem that needed to be solved.

The afternoon became hotter.

Eventually, Ethan pulled his shirt away from his skin.

Ryan laughed.

"What?"

"I'm hot."

"So am I."

"You're smiling."

"Because you're finally admitting it."

Ethan rolled his eyes.

"You are impossible."

"Probably."

Ethan lay back.

Ryan followed.

They stared up through the leaves.

The sunlight moved across the branches as the wind passed through them.

Ryan could hear Ethan breathing beside him.

The sound was comforting.

After a while, Ethan spoke.

"I used to think being comfortable meant nobody noticing anything about me."

Ryan turned his head.

"What do you mean?"

"I thought if I could keep people from noticing that I sweat, then I'd be comfortable."

He paused.

"But that's not comfort."

Ryan listened.

"Comfort is not caring if someone notices."

Ryan smiled.

"Exactly."

Ethan looked at him.

"I think I finally understand."

Ryan reached for his hand.

Their fingers intertwined.

"You've changed."

"So have you."

Ryan smiled.

"Maybe."

Ethan squeezed his hand.

"No. Definitely."

Ryan looked at their hands.

"I think you changed me too."

"How?"

"You made me realize I don't always have to be the confident one."

Ethan smiled.

"You are still pretty confident."

"Only because you're around."

Ethan laughed softly.

Ryan turned toward him.

"That's true."

Ethan's smile faded slightly.

"Ryan?"

"Yeah?"

"Do you ever still feel embarrassed?"

Ryan thought about it.

"Of course."

Ethan looked surprised.

"Really?"

"Sometimes."

"Even now?"

"Yes."

Ryan smiled.

"Being comfortable doesn't mean every insecurity disappears."

Ethan nodded.

"It means I don't let the insecurity decide what I do."

Ethan looked thoughtful.

"That's what you've been trying to teach me."

Ryan shook his head.

"You taught yourself."

"I couldn't have done it without you."

Ryan didn't answer immediately.

He felt emotion rise in his chest.

Ethan had once believed Ryan was simply confident.

Now he understood the truth.

And somehow, that understanding made Ryan feel closer to him than ever.

Ryan lifted Ethan's hand and kissed his knuckles gently.

Ethan smiled.

"I love this."

"What?"

"This."

Ryan looked at him.

"Us?"

"Yeah."

Ethan shifted closer.

Ryan wrapped an arm around him.

They stayed that way for a long time.

No urgency.

No need to prove anything.

Their bodies were warm from the afternoon heat, and neither seemed bothered.

Ryan realized how much had changed.

Their relationship had begun with insecurity.

They had noticed each other's sweat before they had understood each other's hearts.

What had once been a source of fear had become one of the things that connected them.

Not because sweat itself was romantic.

Because vulnerability had become familiar.

Ryan could see Ethan without the carefully controlled version of himself.

And Ethan could see Ryan without the confident mask.

They could be tired.

Sweaty.

Nervous.

Quiet.

Happy.

They could be imperfect.

And neither of them had to disappear.

As the afternoon began to fade, they packed their things.

Ethan stood and stretched.

Ryan watched him.

"You know what?"

"What?"

"I love seeing you like this."

Ethan looked confused.

"Like what?"

"Comfortable."

Ethan smiled.

"I'm getting there."

"I know."

Ryan stepped closer.

"I love seeing you finally comfortable in your own skin."

Ethan's expression softened.

"I never thought I'd hear someone say that about me."

Ryan touched his cheek.

"You deserve to hear it."

Ethan looked at him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Ethan leaned forward and rested his forehead against Ryan's.

"I feel safe with you."

Ryan closed his eyes.

"So do I."

Ethan wrapped his arms around him.

Ryan held him tightly.

The park was still quiet around them.

The sun was lower now, and the heat was beginning to soften.

Ethan stayed in Ryan's arms without worrying about how he looked.

Ryan didn't worry either.

They simply stood together.

Ethan finally understood that what they had built was bigger than attraction.

It wasn't only the excitement of their first kiss.

It wasn't only the way Ryan made his heart race.

It wasn't only physical closeness.

Their relationship had become a place.

A place where Ethan could breathe.

A place where Ryan could stop pretending.

A place where neither of them had to apologize for being human.

Ethan smiled against Ryan's shoulder.

"I think you're my safe place."

Ryan held him closer.

"And you're mine."

They stood together for another quiet moment before beginning the walk back toward the bus stop.

The heat hadn't disappeared.

The world hadn't changed.

There would still be difficult days.

There would still be moments when insecurity returned.

But now they knew what to do when it happened.

They would talk.

They would listen.

They would stay.

And as Ryan walked beside Ethan, their shoulders brushing with every few steps, he realized that love had become something much simpler than he once imagined.

It was not about finding someone who never made you feel vulnerable.

It was about finding someone with whom vulnerability no longer felt dangerous.

With Ethan beside him, Ryan finally understood what that felt like.

Home didn't have to be a place.

Sometimes it was a person who let you be completely yourself.
