Chapter 20 The Smell of Home #2

They had simply started walking after dinner, following the familiar path without discussing where they were going.

Eventually, they reached the entrance.

Ethan stopped.

Ryan looked at him.

"You okay?"

Ethan smiled.

"Yeah."

He looked through the glass doors.

"This is where I met you."

Ryan smiled.

"The locker room."

"You looked so confident."

Ryan laughed.

"I was pretending."

"I know that now."

They stood there for a moment.

The building was almost empty.

The lights inside were dimmer than usual, and the pool area was quiet.

Ryan remembered their first conversation.

Ethan had been standing near the lockers, careful and uncomfortable, trying to make sure nobody noticed how much he was sweating.

Ryan had recognized the fear immediately.

He hadn't known then how important that recognition would become.

They walked inside.

The pool was closed for the evening, but the viewing area was open.

They sat near the edge of the empty pool.

Ethan looked at the water.

"I remember being terrified here."

"Of the competition?"

Ethan shook his head.

"Of people."

Ryan understood.

Ethan rested his hands on his knees.

"When I first met you, I thought everyone was noticing me."

Ryan listened.

"I thought they were looking at my shirt. My skin. Whether I was sweating. Whether I smelled."

He smiled sadly.

"I spent so much time trying to disappear."

Ryan looked at him.

"You never disappeared."

"I tried."

"I know."

Ethan looked around the pool.

"I thought if I could control everything, nobody would have a reason to judge me."

Ryan nodded.

"But I couldn't control it."

"No."

"My body didn't cooperate."

Ryan smiled faintly.

"Neither did mine."

Ethan laughed.

"Exactly."

The laughter faded into silence.

Ethan looked toward the empty lanes.

"I used to think that was the worst thing about me."

Ryan didn't interrupt.

"I thought my sweat was proof that something was wrong with me."

His voice became softer.

"I thought if someone noticed, they would see me differently."

Ryan reached for his hand.

Ethan let him take it.

"But then I met you."

Ryan smiled.

"And you had the same problem."

"Yeah."

Ethan shook his head.

"At first, I thought that was just a strange coincidence."

"It was."

"But it became something else."

Ryan looked at him.

Ethan squeezed his hand.

"You understood me."

Ryan's chest tightened.

"I understood the fear."

"I know."

Ethan looked down at their hands.

"And I think that's why I trusted you."

Ryan leaned slightly closer.

"You didn't have to."

"I wanted to."

The words were simple.

But Ryan knew what they meant.

Ethan had chosen him.

Again and again.

Even after fear had tried to separate them.

Even after the photograph.

The arguments.

The silence.

The insecurity.

They had found their way back.

Ethan looked around the room.

"I keep thinking about how strange our story is."

Ryan smiled.

"Very strange."

"We didn't meet at some romantic party."

"No."

"We met because we were both worried about sweating."

Ryan laughed.

"That sounds terrible when you say it like that."

Ethan laughed too.

"But it's true."

Ryan looked at him.

"Maybe that's what made it real."

Ethan nodded.

"Maybe."

They sat quietly.

The pool reflected the overhead lights.

Ryan could see Ethan's reflection beside his own.

Two men who had once been strangers.

Two men who had spent years believing they needed to hide parts of themselves.

Now they were sitting together on the last evening of their college lives.

Openly.

Without fear.

Ethan looked at him.

"Do you remember what you told me the first time?"

Ryan thought about it.

"That you didn't need to worry?"

"Yeah."

Ryan smiled.

"I was trying to make you feel better."

"You did."

Ethan's expression became thoughtful.

"But I think you gave me more than that."

"What?"

"You gave me a place where I didn't have to pretend."

Ryan looked at him.

Ethan continued.

"And eventually, I learned how to give myself that place too."

Ryan felt emotion rise in his chest.

He wrapped an arm around Ethan.

Ethan leaned into him.

For several minutes, they said nothing.

The familiar closeness felt effortless.

Ryan could feel Ethan's warmth against him.

He could feel the faint dampness of his skin after the evening walk.

Once, Ethan would have immediately worried about it.

Now he didn't move away.

Ryan smiled.

Ethan noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You keep saying that."

"I'm thinking."

"About?"

Ryan looked at him.

"How much you've changed."

Ethan smiled.

"I think you changed too."

"Probably."

"No."

Ethan shook his head.

"Definitely."

Ryan waited.

"You used to hide behind confidence."

Ryan smiled faintly.

"Still do sometimes."

"Not with me."

Ryan looked at him.

"Not anymore."

That was the truth.

Ethan knew him.

The real him.

The insecure teenager.

The young man who had learned to joke before anyone else could hurt him.

The person who still sometimes worried about being judged.

And Ethan had stayed.

That mattered more than Ryan could explain.

Ethan rested his head against Ryan's shoulder.

"I used to hate this part of myself."

Ryan knew exactly what he meant.

"The sweating?"

"The shame."

Ryan nodded.

Ethan continued.

"I thought that was the thing I needed to get rid of before I could really be happy."

Ryan looked at him.

"And now?"

Ethan smiled.

"Now I think it was part of the journey."

Ryan's eyes softened.

"How?"

Ethan took a slow breath.

"If I hadn't spent all those years feeling embarrassed, maybe I wouldn't have understood what it meant when you told me I didn't have to hide."

Ryan remained quiet.

"If I hadn't been afraid of people noticing me, maybe I wouldn't have recognized how safe I felt with you."

Ethan looked at him.

"If I hadn't been ashamed, maybe I wouldn't have learned that being accepted is different from being perfect."

Ryan gently touched his cheek.

Ethan smiled.

"So the thing I thought made me unlovable became part of the journey that led me to love."

Ryan's throat tightened.

"That's beautiful."

Ethan laughed softly.

"I didn't plan it."

"You don't have to."

Ryan pulled him closer.

Ethan rested against him.

For a long time, they simply stayed there.

No speech.

No dramatic promise.

No need to prove anything.

The familiar scent of Ethan's skin reached Ryan, warm and natural after the evening.

Ryan realized how different his reaction was now.

There had been a time when scent had represented fear.

Embarrassment.

Judgment.

Now the familiar smell of Ethan simply meant Ethan was close.

It meant safety.

It meant comfort.

It meant the person Ryan loved was beside him.

Home.

Not because of a building.

Not because of a room.

Because of a person.

Ethan lifted his head.

"What are you thinking?"

Ryan smiled.

"Home."

Ethan looked confused.

"Home?"

Ryan nodded.

"That's what this feels like."

Ethan's expression softened.

"Me too."

Ryan kissed his forehead.

Ethan closed his eyes.

They remained together until the evening grew darker.

Eventually, they stood.

Ethan looked around the aquatic center one last time.

"This is goodbye."

Ryan shook his head.

"Not goodbye."

"What then?"

"The end of this part."

Ethan smiled.

"And the beginning of the next."

They walked outside.

The campus lights had come on.

The pathways were nearly empty.

Ryan took Ethan's hand.

They walked slowly toward the dorm.

Room 318 was waiting for them one final night.

Tomorrow, they would pack the last boxes.

They would attend graduation.

They would take photographs.

They would say goodbye to professors and teammates.

They would leave the place where they had met.

But they wouldn't be leaving each other.

At the dorm entrance, Ethan stopped.

Ryan turned toward him.

"I love you."

The words were quiet.

Simple.

Certain.

Ryan smiled.

"I love you too."

Ethan leaned closer.

Their foreheads touched.

For a moment, everything felt still.

The years of embarrassment.

The fear.

The rumors.

The arguments.

The uncertainty.

All of it had led them here.

Not to a perfect life.

To a shared one.

Ryan wrapped his arms around Ethan.

Ethan held him tightly.

Their familiar warmth surrounded them.

The same closeness that had once made them nervous now felt completely natural.

It felt like safety.

It felt like acceptance.

It felt like home.

The next morning, they graduated together.

They stood among their classmates wearing their gowns and smiling for photographs.

When the ceremony ended, Ethan looked at Ryan.

"Ready?"

Ryan smiled.

"Ready."

They walked away from the university side by side.

Their degrees were packed away.

Their future was uncertain.

Their careers were only beginning.

They still had apartments to find, jobs to start, bills to pay, and countless ordinary problems waiting for them.

But neither man felt alone.

Ethan looked back at the campus one final time.

He thought about the person he had been when he arrived.

A young man who believed his body was something to hide.

Someone who thought one embarrassing moment could destroy everything.

Someone who was terrified of being noticed.

Then he looked at Ryan.

The man who had noticed him anyway.

The man who understood.

The man who had stayed.

Ethan smiled.

Maybe he had spent years trying to hide the part of himself that he thought made him different.

Instead, that vulnerability had led him to the person who taught him he never needed to disappear.

Ryan squeezed his hand.

"Come on."

Ethan smiled.

"Yeah."

They kept walking.

Away from the campus.

Toward the city.

Toward their new apartment.

Toward their careers.

Toward the life they had chosen together.

And as they walked side by side, Ethan realized something he would carry with him long after graduation.

Love had never required him to become someone else.

It had simply given him the courage to become comfortable being himself.

Ryan was beside him.

Their hands were intertwined.

Their future was waiting.

And for the first time, Ethan wasn't afraid of being seen.

He was exactly where he wanted to be.

With the man who stayed.

With the man he loved.

With the man who had become home.
