Chapter 54

Henri

Cade had these new prefab cabins shipped in, and my team has been working nonstop from one of them. I’m almost completely out of pills, and we are nowhere near going home. The thoughts are keeping me up at night. Being here, with this pack, there’s no privacy.

What am I going to do?

I get up in the early hours of the morning. The kind that Deacon and Lena claim should be illegal to operate during. Regardless of the time of day, I exit the little bedroom I’ve claimed as my own. There’s a mountain of work to be done, so four hours of sleep is going to have to be enough.

On top of my laptop is an amber pill bottle. I squint at it from the kitchen, where I’m filling the drip coffee maker’s filter.

Did I leave my pills out?

The bottle looks smaller than mine.

After I get the coffee started, I walk over to it, and my heart rate picks up. A note is underneath the bottle .

Henri,

Take one every 2 hours after your last pill hits the 24-hour mark and you’d normally take another one. Exactly 2 hours. No exceptions. Not even sleep.

- Deacon

I don’t even question whose they are. The instructions tell me they’re not mine. It’s not an emergency order that was rushed to get to me. There aren’t a lot of options here as to who they were originally intended for.

Guilt sinks in, causing me to shiver.

No. Whoever they were for, Deacon wouldn’t screw someone else over for me. He wouldn’t hurt someone else for me.

But I know that’s not true. Deacon has said he would hurt Nathan for me. But Lena, Dinah, Morrigan, Meaghan? He wouldn’t hurt them to help me. So, it must be that someone doesn’t need these.
