APRIL

Sitting outside in the cold night air, I watch as a satellite blinks across the sky.

The door to the deck opens, and Finn steps out into the dark. “Thought I’d find you out here.”

“Yeah. Little overwhelming. I’ll be back in in a minute.”

“Well, glad I caught you. Actually.” Finn takes a seat next to me and offers out his hand to give me something.

I hold open my palm, trusting whatever he’s going to give me is something I want and not disturbing.

Heavy metal drops in my hand, and I pull it back to inspect it.

“I know we joked about it, and maybe it’s in bad taste, but I didn’t want you to think none of us noticed.” Finn lets me look at the metal.

The thick metal coin features a velociraptor on one side and a number—366—on the back.

I look at him, raising my eyebrow. “Uh, thanks?”

Finn explains, “Velociraptor attack free for a full leap year. I know you’ve done it without any of the human meetings or really recognized support. So, you miss out on people seeing the milestones.”

I roll the coin in my fingers, looking at it, blinking away the moisture in my eyes. “Thank you.”
