Getting to Know Your Match: Why Starting Slow Wins the Game
Hey everyone.
It’s Emma, back for another episode of From The Stands, With Love.
Today we’re talking about the smartest way to begin any match.
There’s a reason for Elvis’s infamous lyrics ‘Only Fools Rush In’, and that’s because we’ve all seen what can happen when people rush into a relationship.
Sparks fly, and they immediately jump into a full-blown relationship. Jumping headfirst into the deep end.
Yeah, it can be fun, but that’s like jumping straight into overtime without warming up.
An injury waiting to happen.
Having said that, the best way, in my opinion, is to take the time to really get to know each other.
Here’s my simple playbook.
Start with messages. Emails, texts, or whatever feels comfortable. You know, the low-pressure stuff.
No video, phone calls, or immediate meetups.
Just words on a screen.
Why? It gives you time to be yourself without the nerves of real-time conversation. To see if you want to get to know the person on the other end more.
Yes, physical attraction is important, but when you go solely based on chemistry alone, the relationship is more likely to burn hot, then fizzle.
That’s not what we’re looking for.
We’re looking for a relationship built to last, and that starts with friendship. A foundation.
Approach this new experience with that in mind.
Ask real questions. See how they answer.
Be honest, but kind.
You don’t have to spill everything on day one, but don’t hide who you are, flaws and all. The right person won’t run; they’ll lean in. They may even find the things you hate endearing.
Remember, it’s okay if things don’t click. Sometimes that’s just the way the ball bounces.
They’ll always be another opportunity.
You know what I need now, so drop your stories below!
Have you ever started slow with someone and been surprised how well it worked? Or rushed in only to be left wishing you’d taken it slow?
This is your favorite neighborhood matchmaker, Emma, signing off.
