Chapter 6
M aureen had expected James to phone or text her by now, but she swatted the thoughts away as if they were pesky gnats. He rarely called her when she was home, so why would he change his modus operandi now? But he might worry about Amanda just this once. An early riser, her husband might already be at the gym. He loved to be the first one there. And everywhere.
She calculated the time back home and decided that not even James would get up this early. She wondered if he was sleeping in his own bed. With her out of town, anything could happen. Many mornings she woke up and found him snoozing in the guest room. He’d explained that he didn’t want to bother her when he got home so late from a meeting and then buzzed off to work early—when the stock market opened. But she had to wonder.
She felt disconnected from him. An unsettling thought hit her like an arrow flying out of nowhere: did he love her anymore? And did she care. No matter. Now was not the time to wrestle with such monumental questions. Not when an adventure awaited her.
She checked in her purse to make sure her phone was there, then chided herself for thinking James might have called her when her phone was on airplane mode.
“Everything okay, sis?” Denny asked her.
“Just checking to make sure I didn’t forget anything.”
“Don’t worry, we’re in good hands with Alec.” Denny elongated his name in a lazy way that made Maureen think Denny had set her sight on him. “He seems trustworthy.”
Honestly, couldn’t Denny keep her priorities in check? Maureen had not brought her little sister along to troll for men.
