Chapter Three

Wren

Iwake to the smell of woodsmoke and a ceiling I don't know.

Logs. Real ones, peeled and gold and seamed with old chinking, low enough that a tall man would have to mind his head.

There's firelight moving on them, orange and patient, and for a few seconds I let myself believe I'm a child somewhere safe and this is a dream of a safe place.

Then I breathe wrong and my ribs file a complaint that brings the whole night back in a rush.

The mine. The hand. The fall. The white.

The man with a voice like the bottom of a quarry pulling me out of a wrecked truck.

I sit up too fast. The room tilts, settles.

I'm on a narrow bed against the wall of a single-room cabin, under more wool blankets than I've owned in my life.

My right leg is splinted, ankle wrapped tight and elevated on a folded coat.

My ribs are taped. Someone undressed me to my base layers and dressed the cut on my forehead and did it all, I can tell, with a clinical competence that never once lingered.

There's water on the stool beside me. There's a chamber pot, which tells me something about both the plumbing and his estimate of my mobility.

And there he is.

He's at the far end of the room, at a workbench, with his back to me, doing something to a rifle with a rag and an economy of motion that I feel in my teeth.

In the firelight he's enormous. Not bulky, but built like the mountain made him for a purpose and then forgot to soften the edges.

Dark hair shot through with gray, cropped rough like he cuts it himself.

A beard. Forearms corded from real work.

When he turns, his face is all hard planes and a stillness so complete it's its own kind of loud, and his eyes, gray, weather-colored, land on me and stay.

"You're awake," he says. Not a question. "Good. Concussions, you want to know they come back."

"Where am I." My voice is sandpaper.

"My place. Above the treeline. Eleven miles from where you went over and about a thousand feet up." He sets the rifle down with a care that says he respects it. "Roads are gone. Storm dropped fourteen inches and it's still coming. Nobody's getting up here and nobody's getting down. Not for days."

Days. The word sits in my chest like a swallowed stone.

I should be afraid. I'm alone, hurt, on a mountain with a man twice my size whose name I don't know.

Some animal part of me is taking exactly that inventory.

But the same animal part keeps catching on the other facts: the splint, the water, the way he stays all the way across the room with the door at his own back, leaving me the wall and the warmth, making himself the thing between me and the cold.

A predator wouldn't give you the warm corner.

"You have a name?" I ask.

"Eli." A pause, like the rest of it costs something. "Brandt."

"Wren Utley." I test the splint with one finger. "You did this?"

"Sprained, not broken. Two cracked ribs, maybe. Bad cut, no stitches I'd trust me to do right. You'll heal." He says it flat, a report, and then, after a moment, lower: "You said there were men."

And there it is. The thing under the thing. I'd half hoped the fall had jumbled it, that I'd misremembered, that the gray hand was a trick of shock. But saying it to him on the mountainside made it true, and his face when he asks tells me he hasn't filed it under fever-dream either.

"Two of them." I make myself say it cleanly, like data.

"At an old mine up a road I took by mistake.

They had a body in a tarp. They were putting it in the adit.

One saw me. The other was on the phone before I'd even gotten turned around.

" I watch his face for the flicker of doubt that everyone gives me, the professor, the cops in my head, my mother, the look that says girls exaggerate.

It doesn't come. "They know there was a witness.

They don't have a name yet, but they will.

There's a wrecked Forest Service truck on the mountain with my field tags all over it. "

Eli is quiet for a long moment. The fire pops. Outside, the wind leans on the cabin and the cabin doesn't move.

"How many roads up to that mine," he says.

"I don't—two, I think. The way I came, and there's a longer grade from the south the survey map showed."

"Then we've got a little time." He crosses to the fire at last, crouches, feeds it a split of pine with hands that could palm my whole skull, and I notice he keeps the rifle within reach the entire time without ever making a show of it.

"Here's how this goes. You're hurt and you're snowed in, so you're here whether either of us likes it.

I don't much like it. I came up this mountain to be alone and I've been good at it.

" He looks at me, and there's nothing cruel in it, just the plain truth of a plain man.

"But I don't let people freeze and I don't hand a hurt woman to the men who put her in a ditch.

So you're under my roof, and under my roof you're safe. That's not a kindness. That's a fact."

"And if they come up here?"

He doesn't blink. Doesn't move at all.

"Then I'll be glad I cleaned the rifle."

He says it so simply, so without heat, that it takes me a second to understand he means it exactly and entirely.

Not bravado. Not a movie line. A man stating the conditions of the world the way he'd tell me the storm would last three days.

And the strange, shameful, undeniable thing, the thing I will not examine yet, hurt and stranded and twenty-four and alone with him, is that it doesn't frighten me.

It's the first time since the mine that the cold lets go of my chest.

I lie back against the wall. The fire burns.

The storm seals us in like amber, and the last thing I think before sleep takes me again is that I have never in my life been somebody worth standing in front of, and now I am, and the man who's decided to do it is a stranger with a clean rifle and the loneliest eyes I've ever seen.
