Desiderio
I looked at him and admired his expressions as he took in the surroundings. I’ve been here many times, but witnessing the reactions of those who saw it for the first time brought me a different kind of happiness.
I stepped to the left and took my place next to him. I gazed at him as he gazed into the vast beyond. His eyes were twinkling as he took everything in.
“I’ve never felt so small in my life,” he said. I can’t believe a place like this exists.”
“Yet, here we are.” I smiled.
“Wasn’t this castle built by the Spanish King to protect the Havana port from pirates and invaders?”
“Yes. And if you turn around,” I gently grabbed his shoulder and turned him, “You can see some of the thirty cannons used to protect it.”
He practically jumped before he took off towards the one closest to us.
“These are incredible,” he smiled, “I bet they took down a ship or two!”
I laughed. “Yes, many ships.”
We stood a while longer before I looked at my watch.
“The castle is getting ready to close, so we should head back to the car.”
He sighed. “Okay.”
“Don’t worry,” I reassured. There is plenty more beauty to see, and I will show you all of it.”
“I’m only here for three days.”
“Well, let’s not waste time then!” I ran full speed down the ramp and towards the car.
“Hey!” He yelled out. “Wait for me!”
I got to the car and jumped in before he could catch up to me. He took a seat and gave me a sideways glance.
“Finally!” I looked at my watch. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
“Shut up.” He teased and buckled his seatbelt. “Where to next?”
“I was thinking we could go to Café Cantante Mi Habana.”
“What is that?”
“It’s a dance club. Food, live bands, everything.”
“Dancing?” He asked with wide eyes.
“Yeah. It’s a lot of fun, and there is always someone to dance with.”
He looked out his window before he spoke again.
“I don’t know how to dance…”
“I could show you…”
He slowly turned his head to look at me.
“Really?”
I swallowed hard as I felt a heat overtake me.
“That is if you want me to.”
He smiled widely. “I’d like that.”
“Then off to the club we go.” I started the car and backed up before heading back into the heart of Havana.
