Desiderio
As we walked hand-in-hand, the feelings of losing him tomorrow weighed heavily on my heart. He was a stranger in the coffee shop a few days ago, but now, he is the reason my heart sings the song of the morning birds.
I was determined to keep a smile, even if it was derived from thoughts of sorrow.
He let go as I opened the door for him. I walked to my side and started it up, momentarily listening to the engine as I did my best to focus on the present moment.
“Everything okay?” He asked as he leaned closer.
I pushed the somber feelings further down and leaned closer to him.
“I am, I reassured, “I’m just ready to give you a day you’ll never forget.”
He half-smiled and nodded.
“Sounds good. Has your heart decided where to lead you?”
“Yes,” I snickered, “It is what both our hearts need.”
“Then, let’s go.” He said enthusiastically.
I peeled out of the parking lot at the speed of light. I didn’t want to waste any moments I had left with him. In the words of an American country singer, time is love.
He hand-surfed as we grew closer to the destination. I couldn’t help but smile. He was already growing accustomed to the island way of life.
Regardless of the direction or intensity of the wind, our hearts will forever lead us to where they truly belong. They will reveal the embrace in which they can find solace. Let us allow our hearts to be our guiding light.
We parked in a small spot just a few feet from the sand. He quickly unbuckled and ran to my door, which he opened, pulling me from the seat.
“How did you know?” He asked.
“Know what?”
“That I wanted to see one of the beaches…”
“My heart must have sensed it.”
He placed his hand on my chest and looked deeply into my eyes. He locked on them as he whispered the beat of my heart.
“Ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum… It’s like the beat of a drum.”
I grabbed his hand in mine, looking deep into his eyes as I leaned in. Our lips gently met for a slow and tender kiss. The world around us slowed down as we drowned out the noise around us.
Right here and now, all that matters is us.
“Let’s go, my beautiful beach boy.”
He smiled and grabbed my hand. We walked through the sand and found a large umbrella in the distance. We ran to it and found relief from the blazing afternoon sun.
Our heads turned to look at everything around us. Families laughed and yelled as they ran around the water and threw frisbees along the sand. Others were sprawled out, allowing the sun to kiss their bare skin.
“Desiderio?”
“Hmm? Yeah?”
“I see a buggy with drinks, do you think we could get one?”
“What are we waiting for?” I asked slyly.
We walked over and waited in line with the other people. The air was hot and muggy, and all I could think about was a cold drink in my hand.
