Chapter 60
Trooper
“Ineed to tell you something before we get off the plane.” I sat in front of Sophie on the edge of my seat, leaning forward with my elbows propped on my knees, fingers intertwined while my chin rested on top.
I kept my eyes on her as I studied her face to try and read her. She was nervous, but that was to be expected with everything that had happened in the past forty-eight hours.
“Should I be worried?”
My expression didn’t change, but I kept my voice calm while I answered.
“To be perfectly honest, I don’t give a fuck about the information I’m about to tell you one way or another, but I know you do.
So listen carefully. However you need to react, let it flow and get that shit out of your system.
Because when we leave this plane, you leave that shit right here. ”
“Trooper, just tell me.”
Now she looked panicked. She had been in Jamaica for a week, which meant she had no connection to anything going on back in The States.
Mostly that William and Lincoln were dead.
I wanted to be the one who told her, because regardless of what William and Lincoln had done to her, there was a possibility she would still have feelings about it.
“William and Lincoln are dead,” I said coolly and waited.
Her mouth opened and closed a few times before I actually heard her voice.
“Did you do it?”
Her voice was so low I barely understood what she asked.
“No, your father did.” I paused and looked her right in the eyes so there would be no mistaking the truth behind what I was about to say next. “But I would have and that goes for anyone who is a threat to you or our child.”
Her eyes were still on me, but she hadn’t said anything yet.
“Sophie, say what’s on your mind.”
“I’m glad. Is that a bad thing?” she asked with a seriousness that almost made me smile, but I kept my feelings contained.
“No, it’s not a bad thing. They both did some fuck shit to you and it’s okay for you to want them to get what they deserve.
But with that being said, I need you to leave that to me.
Don’t change who you are because that boogie ass, innocent Sophie who didn’t know shit about the streets is the Sophie I fell in love with.
That’s the Sophie who will be the mother of my child and one day my wife.
Let me be me and you stay who you are. I’ll get my hands dirty for you.
I make you that promise right here, right now, and you can depend on that for as long as I got air in my lungs. ”
Seconds later, Sophie had a grin on her face. “Mother of your child and your wife?”
“Yo, I just told you I’m dropping bodies for you because I love you that much, and all you got out of that was the mother of my child and wife?” I chuckled at her goofy ass grin.
“No, what I got out of that was that you love me enough to want me to be the mother of your child and your wife. I mean, I’m halfway there, so…” She rubbed her stomach and her smile grew wider.
“I’m not fucking with you like that. Let’s go, so I can take you home. I need to run by and see Los after I get you situated.”
“So you made me go to Jamaica for a week and now that I’m home you’re leaving me?”
“Just for a minute, but I won’t be long, so just relax and chill until I get back.”
She stood and stepped between my legs. My hands gripped the backs of her thighs while I looked up at her.
“I promise I won’t be long. Just be ready for me when I get back.” I leaned forward and placed a kiss on her stomach before I stood and closed her in my arms.
“I’ll see what I can do.” Sophie grinned and I gripped the back of her neck and pulled her into a kiss. After I let her go, she laughed.
“That didn’t change my answer. I said I’ll see what I can do.”
“Man, bring your ass on before I have to show you just why I know you’ll be ready for me when I get back.”
She rolled her eyes and pulled away from me. I was close behind, but kept enough distance to watch her move. I was definitely a lucky man.
Shit was good until we made it to my place and walked into the lobby. When I told Sophie I’d be dropping bodies, I didn’t know I’d be challenged so soon. Two women were at the security station, and the second the guard pointed our way, they rushed Sophie with recorders in their hands.
“Ms. Prescott. Would you like to give a statement about where you’ve been for the past week and your thoughts on your father and grandfather both being found dead at their mistresses’ homes?”
“Ay, get the fuck out of her face before I catch a case up in this bitch,” I yelled before knocking the recorders out of both of their hands.
“He’s not my father,” Sophie yelled, then stormed off.
“Ay, real shit, get these bitches out of here or I swear I’ll light his bitch up.” I pointed to the guards before I left them to catch up with Sophie. I heard them still shouting questions behind me.
“I hate him. I fucking hate him. He’s dead, but still messing with my life. How did they even know I was here? I’m not a fucking Prescott. I don’t care what they think, I’m not a Prescott,” Sophie yelled the second I got to her.
I didn’t even bother trying to talk her down. That wasn’t what she needed, so I just pulled her into my chest and held her until she pulled away. When she looked at me, frustration was all over her face.
“I just wish I didn’t have that name. It’s not who I want to be anymore,” she said with a certainty that had me trying to figure out how to fix it for her. I had to fix that for her.
After I got Sophie situated, I left to check Los out. But I got Story on the line the second I was in my truck.
“Hey, son, you home?”
“Yeah, just got Sophie situated and I’m about to check Los out. What’s good?”
“Life.”
“Life, huh? That got anything to do with Sophie having reporters all in her gotdamn face asking questions about William and Harold Prescott the second we walked into my building?” I knew the answer to the question before I asked, but he confirmed.
“All I want my daughter to focus on is having that baby so I can meet my grandchild. I made sure she could do that in peace.”
“Last piece to the puzzle?”
“Last piece. Take care of my baby, Troop.”
I chuckled and rubbed my chin as I pulled out of the parking garage.
“She’s your daughter, but she’s my baby. Don’t tell me shit that’s already understood, Story.”
He laughed before he replied, “Just know if you don’t, it’s you and me.”
“Trust me, she’s good, but don’t think I won’t beat your old ass if you ever question that.”
“I can respect that. It will never happen, but I can respect that.”
“Aight, I’ll get at you,” I said with a smug grin.
Things were finally falling back into place.
