19. Sakura

NINETEEN

SAKURA

Later—much later—we’re in his cabin.

The healers came and went hours ago. Torin is exhausted, drained, covered in bruises and small cuts from his journey through the Overgrowth. But he’s alive. Whole. His bear’s resilience is already working to mend the damage.

Valesh is in custody, along with the surviving members of her cell. The Warding Line is damaged but holding. The town is safe.

And I’m sitting on the edge of Torin’s bed, watching him watch me, both of us aware that we’re finally alone.

“We should probably talk about what happened.” My voice comes out shy. Almost hesitant. Which is ridiculous—I claimed this man on a battlefield. I bit him. I told him I love him while his blood was still wet on my hands.

But this feels different. The battle is over. The adrenaline has faded. What comes next isn’t survival—it’s choice.

“What’s there to talk about?” Torin sits up slowly, wincing slightly at muscles that protest the movement. “You saved my life. Claimed me. Bit me.” A pause. “Did I mention the biting?”

“You’ve mentioned it several times.”

“It was memorable.” He reaches out and takes my hand. “You marked me, Sakura. Made me yours. I’m not complaining, but—do you know what that means? For witches and shifters?”

“Grandmother Peach said it would strengthen the Warding Line.”

“It will.” He pulls me closer, and I let him—slide across the bed until I’m pressed against his side, his arm around my shoulders. “But that’s not what I’m asking. For bears—for shifters—the claiming mark is permanent. It means you’re my mate. My partner. My person, for as long as we both live.”

“I know.”

“You knew before you bit me?”

“I knew when you threw yourself at a magical weapon to save me.” I trace my fingers over his chest—bare because the healers stripped what was left of his shirt to treat him, because I haven’t been able to stop touching him since we got back.

“I knew when you wrote poetry about my storms. When you brought me coffee every morning. When you held me through that first episode and your only concern was whether I was safe.”

I meet his gaze.

“I knew, Torin. I was just scared to admit it.”

“And now?”

“Now I’m still scared.” I smile despite the fear.

“But I’m done running. I’m done waiting for you to realize I’m too much and leave.

I’m choosing you. Not because of instinct or fate or magical mate pulls.

Because you showed up every day. Because you saw my chaos and called it beautiful.

Because you never once made me feel like a problem to solve. ”

He kisses me.

It starts gentle—soft lips, tender pressure, a question and an answer all at once.

But the tenderness doesn’t last. Can’t last, not when we’ve been building toward this for weeks, not when the claiming mark on his shoulder is still fresh and the mate pull is finally singing satisfaction instead of longing.

His tongue traces my lower lip. I open for him, and the kiss deepens, turns hungry, turns into a heat that pools low in my belly.

“Sakura.” He breathes my name against my mouth. “We don’t have to—if you need time—”

“I’ve had time.” I fist my hands in his hair and pull him closer. “I’ve had weeks of time. Of wanting you and being scared and almost-moments that never went anywhere.” I nip at his lower lip, gratified by the rough sound he makes. “I don’t want to wait anymore.”

“Thank the gods.”

He moves fast for someone who was near death hours ago.

One moment, I’m pressed against his side. Then his mouth is on my throat, his hands already working at the buttons of my shirt.

“Tell me if I’m too heavy.” His voice is a growl against my skin. “Tell me if I go too fast.”

“You’re not too anything.” I arch into his touch as his fingers find bare skin. “You’re exactly right.”

He undresses me like I’m precious.

Every button revealed, every inch of skin exposed, he follows with his mouth. Kissing. Tasting. Worshipping in a way that makes me feel beautiful instead of chaotic, desired instead of tolerated.

“You have no idea.” His lips trail down my collarbone, over the curve of my breast, lingering at the peak until I gasp. “How long I’ve wanted this. Wanted you.”

“Tell me.” I tangle my fingers in his hair, holding him against me. “Tell me how long.”

“Since the first day.” He switches to my other breast, and I feel his smile against my skin. “You were arguing with a crystal about its energy alignment. There was a tiny thundercloud over your head because the crystal was being obstinate.”

“I remember.” I remember him walking in. Remember the way my magic sparked at the sight of him. “You looked at me like—”

“Like I’d found what I was waiting for.” He kisses lower—my ribs, my stomach, the sensitive skin below my navel. “My bear knew immediately. I took a little longer to accept it.”

“How long?”

“About thirty seconds.” He hooks his fingers in the waistband of my pants. “Can I?”

“Yes.” The word is a breath. A prayer. “Yes, Torin. Please.”

He pulls my pants down my legs, taking my underwear with them. And then I’m bare beneath him, and he’s looking at me like I’m the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen.

“Perfect.” The word rumbles through his chest. “Absolutely perfect.”

“Torin—”

“Shh.” He settles between my thighs. “Let me taste you. I’ve been thinking about this for weeks.”

His mouth finds my center.

I’ve been intimate before. Quick, awkward encounters that never lasted because I never stayed long enough for it to matter, never let anyone close enough to see the chaos underneath.

This is nothing like that.

Torin worships me with his tongue. Long, slow strokes that make my hips buck and my breath stutter. He learns my body like he’s memorizing poetry—every gasp, every moan, every subtle shift that tells him what I like.

And I like everything.

“More.” I’m clutching the sheets, the pillows, anything I can reach. The pressure is building, coiling tight in my core. “Torin, I need—”

He gives me more. His tongue circling, teasing, driving me higher. One thick finger slides inside me, then two, stretching me in the best possible way.

“That’s it.” His voice vibrates against sensitive flesh. “Let go for me, sweetheart. Let me feel you fall apart.”

I shatter.

The orgasm crashes through me like a wave—pleasure radiating outward from my center, making my back arch and my toes curl. Outside, I hear thunder roll—not threatening, just an expression of joy so intense it creates weather.

Torin works me through it, gentling his touch as the aftershocks fade, pressing soft kisses to my inner thighs.

“Beautiful.” He kisses his way back up my body. “You’re beautiful when you come.”

“Your turn.” I’m already reaching for his pants. “I want to feel you.”

He helps me strip away his remaining clothes. And then he’s naked above me, and I finally get to see all of him—the broad shoulders, the thick chest, the muscles that cord his stomach and arms. The evidence of his arousal, hard and ready and impressively proportional to the rest of him.

“Oh.” The word slips out before I can stop it. “You’re—”

“I’ll go slow.” He lowers himself between my legs, the head of him pressing against my entrance. “We can stop whenever you—”

I wrap my legs around his hips and pull him forward.

The stretch is intense. Overwhelming. He’s big—bigger than anyone I’ve been with—and my body needs a moment to adjust, to accommodate, to accept him.

Torin holds perfectly still. His jaw is clenched, muscles trembling with the effort of restraint. Sweat beads on his forehead.

“Okay?” His voice is strained.

“Yes.” I shift my hips experimentally, and we both groan. “Just—give me a second.”

“Take all the time you need.” He lowers his head, kisses me softly. “I’m exactly where I want to be.”

“I know.” I kiss him back, letting my body relax around him. “You always are.”

When I’m ready, I roll my hips. His hips move in response—a slow withdrawal followed by a steady push back in.

“Gods, Sakura.” He buries his face in my neck. “You feel incredible.”

“So do you.” I dig my fingers into his shoulders, urging him on. “More. I can take more.”

He gives me more.

What follows is not gentle.

It starts that way—careful strokes, measured rhythm, both of us learning the feel of each other. But gentleness burns away fast. The weeks of tension, the near-death, the claiming, it all builds to a need that’s beyond soft and sweet.

Torin’s hips snap forward. I cry out—not pain but pleasure, the kind of pleasure that borders on overwhelming but never quite crosses the line. He sets a relentless pace, driving into me with the power of his bear and the precision of a man who’s been memorizing everything that makes me gasp.

“Mine.” The word rumbles from his chest—human and bear combined, possessive and protective. “My mate. My storm. Mine.”

“Yours.” I meet each thrust, rising to meet him, our bodies moving in a rhythm that feels ancient and new all at once. “I’m yours, Torin. I chose you.”

“Say it again.”

“I chose you.” I pull his mouth down to mine, kiss him like I’ll die without it. “I love you. I claim you.”

He growls against my lips, and his pace increases. Harder. Deeper. The sound of our bodies meeting fills the cabin—skin on skin, breath on breath, the creak of the bed frame protesting our enthusiasm.

I’m climbing again. The pressure builds faster this time, my body still sensitive from before, and I can feel myself racing toward the edge.

“Close.” I gasp the word against his throat. “Torin, I’m so close—”

“Come for me.” His hand slides between us, finds the bundle of nerves that makes me see stars. “Come, Sakura. I want to feel you.”

The orgasm hits harder than the first one. I clench around him, my whole body shuddering with the force of it, and outside, thunder booms and lightning cracks across a sky that was clear moments ago.

Torin follows me over the edge. He buries himself deep and groans my name like it’s the only word he knows, his body pulsing as he finds his release.

And in that moment—at the peak of pleasure, at the height of intimacy—his teeth find my shoulder.

He bites.

The mark blooms where his teeth break skin.

I feel it happen—feel the claiming complete itself, feel the mate pull finally settle into permanent satisfaction. His mark mirrors mine, storm clouds and bear tracks intertwined.

We belong to each other now. Truly. Completely.

My magic settles.

The power goes quiet. Not diminished—I still feel it, still sense the elements responding to my emotions. But it’s calm. Anchored. Grounded in a way I never knew was possible.

“Oh.” I stare at the ceiling, processing. “That’s... new.”

“What’s new?” Torin is still inside me, still holding me, his breath evening out from exertion.

“My magic. It’s... settled.”

He lifts his head to look at me. “Settled how?”

“Just... calm. For the first time ever.” I laugh—a wet, incredulous sound. “I’ve spent my whole life fighting to control my power, and all I needed was a stubborn bear who writes about wanting to hold my storms?”

“My poetry isn’t that bad.”

“‘Her storms could level cities. I would let them.’“ I trace my fingers over his claiming mark. “That’s extremely earnest.”

“It’s heartfelt.”

“It’s ridiculous.” I kiss his nose. “I love it anyway.”

“I love you.” He rolls us so I’m draped across his chest, our bodies still joined. “I love you and your weather and the way you argue with crystals. I love that you claimed me on a battlefield and bit me before we’d even been on a proper date.”

“We went on stakeouts.”

“Surveillance isn’t dating.”

“There were snacks. You curated snacks based on my preferences.”

“That’s stalking, not romance.”

I laugh again—lighter now, happier than I can remember being in years.

“I love you too.” I prop myself up on his chest. “I love your patience and your coffee deliveries and the way you write poetry you think no one will ever see. I love that you waited for me to be ready, even when it would have been easier to push.”

“I would never push.”

“I know.” I kiss him—slow and sweet, no urgency this time. “That’s why I chose you.”

His arms tighten around me.

Outside, the weather is perfect. Clear skies. Gentle breeze. The kind of calm, beautiful evening that usually only happens in paintings.

“Look at that.” Torin nods toward the window. “No storms.”

“For now.” I snuggle into his chest. “I can’t promise it’ll last.”

“I don’t need it to last.” He kisses the top of my head. “I just need you.”

“You have me.” I close my eyes, letting contentment wash through me. “Forever, if you want.”

“Forever.” The word is a promise. A vow. “That works for me.”

We stay like that as the stars come out—tangled in his bed, claimed and claiming, finally where we both belong.

For the first time in my life, I’m not afraid of the morning.

I’m not afraid of anything.
