Chapter 6 #3
“Make it short, Deacon,” she snapped, clearly not backing down from getting all the details right here and right now.
“Well it turns out that… Well, for one… we’re…”
“Deacon, if you don’t spit it the hell out! Stuttering like that gon’ mess up your game.” I laughed by myself since Kay’s stony expression let me know she wasn’t playing.
“Well, we’re still married and Grandpa put a nice clause in my portion of the will that includes her.”
She was quiet for a second with a perplexed expression, then started counting on her fingers. Kay was extra as hell most of the time.
“Considering I was there when you signed those papers, that’s not adding up. So obviously someone fucked up.” Kay snapped then pointed.
“It was Hollis, wasn’t it? She forgot to sign, didn’t she?”
I shook my head while laughing as I continued to eat.
“No. Trust me, she signed. I don’t know where the mess up happened but legally we’re still together.”
She snorted. “Yeah, okay. But that doesn’t explain what she has to do with your portion of the will and why she’s in your house, without you at that.”
“Grandpa left us the house, the car, and a trust fund for our kids. And legally, I need her to get any of it or it goes to Ray’s ass.” Kay gasped as she covered her mouth.
“Oh, Jimmy.” It got quiet while I continued to eat. “Can’t you just buy her out or something and do it without involving her?”
I shook my head again as I ate my last bite.
“Nope. We have to prove that we’re a happily married couple who lives together. Which brings me to my other point.” I paused, grabbing the bottle of water and drinking, giving her time to process everything.
“I can’t add her to anything without it being a bad look. We talked to her lawyer and she said written statements from family and friends will work best. So can you write us one?”
There was a pregnant pause as Kay just blinked hard at me before she spoke.
“Y’all need to be a loving couple before any of us could do that. Maybe Ray getting the house will be easier. You could buy it from him.”
“Hell no. I’m not buying my shit from your brother’s ass and we both know how he gets down.
He’ll tax it just because I got it like that.
” I mocked my cousin’s annoying voice, whining a bit.
We were the only grands that Jimmy had and growing up we were cool until I got Hollis and baseball.
The switch up with Ray hurt a lot, but as I got older, I realized that nigga was a loud and proud hating muthafucka.
“Plus, you already know what the house means to me. C’mon Kay, please.” She turned, hanging her head to the side as she put her hand on her hip, pressing her lips together, clearly irritated.
“Fine, I’ll help, but I mean it, y’all gon’ have to do more than shack up for a few weeks to make the world believe it.
Remember you’re…no, correction, y’all are both very public people.
The judge will look into that, especially if they are a fan of the game.
No one is going to believe y’all have been married for eleven years and some change, no one has ever seen y’all together in public before.
Not to mention the damage control that will be needed to make sense of that scandal you had a few years ago with that other heffa who shall be nameless.
” Kay scoffed at her reference to Talisa Storm, which had me laughing as I got up to leave.
“Trust me, I’m sure Holls is working on something as we speak considering she’s the one who wrote the original story that debunked that bullshit ass accusation.” That had Kay huffing and puffing louder.
“A gotdamn mess. At this point you need a damn publicist. I swear y’all still driving my gotdamn pressure.”
“Exactly. Why do I need one of them when I have you and Hollis? Thanks for lunch and I love you.”
“I love you too. I’ll have the letter emailed no later than tonight. Also, FYI, you still have that savings account with her name on it that you can add to y’all’s case.” I was heading toward the door when I stopped in my tracks, turning to see Kay right behind me.
“Damn, I forgot about that. Thanks, cuz.”
“Uh hun…”
“Kay, where are you going?” I asked as she grabbed her keys, following me out the door.
“To see your wife. If this is going to work, it’s best if we clear the air. I haven’t seen my cousin-in-law in years.” My eyes bugged at the thought of them two alone.
Again, Kay didn’t hate Hollis nor did Hollis hate Kay, but after ten years of built-up resentment Kay had about how things ended, it was not a good look for her to lead this meeting without me.
“Oh boy, fix your damn face. I’ma be fake nice until I read her energy.
I already didn’t like that she went to her lawyer with this situation.
If Hollis is on some bullshit, I’ll twist Ray’s fingers off to get him to sign the house and stuff over.
Now get to the field and I’ll see you tomorrow.
” We walked out with me opening her driver door for her.
Once she was secure inside, I got in mine, feeling anxiety in my balls all the way to the field.
