CLOSER

The house was alive with the buzz of family. The soft clinking of silverware against plates, the murmur of voices, the warm scent of roasting meats and herbs. It should have been peaceful, comforting, but I couldn't shake the feeling of being out of place.

It wasn't the family that made me uncomfortable. No, it was the way everything had shifted since that night. Since my magic had awoken, and since I had realized what I truly meant to the twins.

As I walked into the dining room, the conversations paused.

I felt every eye on me—all of them. Every. Single. One.

A low hun of awareness radiated from the room. Everyone seemed to be waiting for something, and the moment my gaze met Sera's, I knew she noticed it too. Her eyes widened slightly, her mouth opening in surprise. I didn't need to ask her what she was thinking.

"You—Lani, your hair," she whispered, voice barely audible.

I ran my fingers through the now-silver strands, heat creeping into my cheeks. I hadn't fully realized how noticeable the change was. In the light of the room, my hair glowed, shifting with hints of magic that hummed like a gentle breeze.

"Lani," Sera said again, this time more insistently. "What—what happened to you?"

Before I could respond, Theron and Evander walked in behind me. Their eyes met across the room, and there was a subtle shift in the air, like an electric charge pulsed between them. They were aware of the family's gaze, and they didn't like it.

"Theron was the first to speak. His voice was steady, almost too calm. "She's fine," he said, the words low, but firm. "She's just... adjusting."

Adjusting? That wasn't exactly the right word for what I was feeling. My chest was tight, and my hands trembled as I walked further into the room.

I could see the way the rest of the family looked at me, from the wide eyed curiosity from the younger siblings to the more calculating glances from the older ones. Their eyes followed my every movement, and I couldn't help but feel exposed.

Sera stood up, her expression softening as she reached out to touch my arm. "It's...it's beautiful," she said, her voice gentle but laced with something deeper. "But—Lani, what happened? You're not the same."

I could feel the weight of everyone's stares, but it was Evander's presence that pressed the hardest against me. He stood silently, his expression unreadable, but his gaze didn't leave me. I could feel the magnetic pull between us, stronger than ever.

"Shes not the same," Evander echoed, stepping forward slightly, his eyes darkening. "But shes ours."

The words hit me like a shock, though they weren't loud. There was no mistaking the authority in them, the possessiveness. I felt my heart race at the way everyone's attention shifted to the twins—like they were making a silent claim over me.

The rest of the family seemed unsure of what to do. Some exchanged glances, unsure of how to react to Evander's words. Others remained silent, their gazed flickering between me and the twins.

Theron caught my eye, his expression softened just for a moment. "We're here to help you Lani," he said, his voice quieter now, but still carrying the weight of his promise. "All of us."

I swallowed hard. "I didn't mean for any of this to happen," I whispered.

Evander tilted his head, his voice low but certain. "You don't need to explain it to anyone. Not anymore."

The room was silent, the tension thick. I could felt it wrapping around me, like magic itself was feeding off the uncertainty In the air. I wasn't sure if the family was afraid of what was happening to me, or if they were trying to understand it.

Then the youngest sibling, a curious little boy, spoke up with wide eyes. "You look like a fairy!" His voice was full of wonder, breaking the tension in a way that made everyone laugh.

That little sound of laughter seemed to loosen the tightness in my chest. Sera smiled at me, a warm, reassuring smile that helped me breathe again. "A fairy, huh?" She asked, kneeling down to the little boy. "Maybe she's magic. Maybe she's our fairy."

The tension seemed to break a little, but I could still feel the weight of everyone's eyes on me, particularly the twins.

Theron was still watching me, his gaze soft but intent. "You're not just a fairy, Lani," he said quietly, his words meant only for me. "You're becoming more than that."

His tone made my heart skip a beat, And I couldn't help but to glance Evander, whose dark eyes were now locked onto me with an intensity that made me feel exposed.

The family slowly returned to their conversations, but the air was different. There was no denying that something had shifted. I wasn't the same, and neither were the twins.

We were all connected now in ways that no one could explain.

The family settled into their meals, but I felt disconnected, like I was on the outside looking in. I couldn't stop feeling the magic inside me, the way it stirred and reacted whenever Theron or Evander were near. The way they seemed to pull at me with every glance, every word.

"Lani," Sera whispered, nudging me with her elbow. "Are you okay?"

I nodded quickly, though I wasn't sure what I was feeling. "Yeah, just... distracted."

Theron leaned in, his hand brushing mine, a spark of magic flaring between us at the simple touch. "You're not alone in this," he said softly.

Evander's voice followed, deeper and more possessive. "We won't let you forget it."

The words echoed in my mind long after they were spoken, and as the family continued to eat around me, I couldn't shake the feeling that things were only just the beginning. The bond between us was growing stronger, and nothing—nothing—could stop it now.
