Chapter 55 The Eyes That Remember

The dusty golden streets of Chandlok echoed with whispers and gasps as Sana walked confidently down the stone-paved path, her every step light yet firm.

The morning sun lit her face like a halo, her hair loosely tied behind, and no veil to hide the radiance that had sparked rumors across the kingdom.

The same streets where once, two young hearts—hers and Hatim’s—had laughed while buying roasted nuts and trinkets, were now witnessing the calm before a storm.

Just as she turned past the royal fountain, three soldiers in glinting armor blocked her path.

One of them, a tall man with a sharp jaw, cleared his throat.

“Lady,” he said, trying not to falter under her steady gaze, “you have been summoned to the royal court. We are ordered to escort you… or carry you, if needed.”

Sana raised one eyebrow and folded her arms. “Is that so?” Her voice was soft but laced with mischief. “Well, lucky me. I was heading there anyway. And now, I have the honour of three fine bodyguards.”

The people watching from behind stalls and doors burst into laughter, pointing teasingly at the stunned soldiers. The youngest soldier flushed, embarrassed. “Enough,” growled the leader. “Let’s go. You’ll see for yourself—the monster who called you awaits.”

Sana didn’t reply. But a strange smile played on her lips as she walked forward, the soldiers falling into step beside her, trying to maintain their pride.

---

Far away, in the grand courtroom of Chandlok, Queen Roshni stood near the balcony, her golden bangles gently clinking.

The whispers had reached even her ears—of a mysterious woman whose beauty rivaled the moonlight.

Roshni’s heart beat strangely. She remembered a moment long ago—years past—when she had seen the face of a baby girl in the arms of the forest witch.

That child had eyes that shimmered like dusk and dawn together. Could this be her?

She composed herself and walked to her throne, calm on the outside but a storm brewing within.

On the other end of the hall, Hatim sat on the royal dais, his fingers tapping the carved wood of the armrest. The whispers had reached him too.

He had laughed them off at first. But when the soldiers described her—eyes like the stars, grace like water, beauty that struck silence into crowds—his laughter faded.

He rose from his seat. “Bring her,” he had ordered. “With peace if she agrees. With power if she resists.”

But now, as time ticked by and the court filled with ministers, nobles, and curious guards, Hatim felt a strange restlessness. His heart beat faster with every passing second. Something inside him whispered that she was coming.

---

The doors creaked open.

Everyone turned.

The light from the corridor spilled inside like liquid gold. And then—she stepped in.

Sana.

Hatim knew it instantly. Of course he did. There was no veil, no cloak, no disguise. But even if there had been—he would have known. He was the only one who had seen her face before. He had memorized it, traced it with his gaze under moonlit skies, whispered poems to it in silence.

But now she was real. Walking toward him. In a courtroom filled with people—yet his world had narrowed down to her.

Gasps echoed across the marble floor. Murmurs rippled like waves. But all Hatim could hear was his own heart pounding.

Queen Roshni sat straighter in her seat, her lips parting slightly. Was this the same child she had held—only for a heartbeat?

Sana’s eyes didn’t wander. They were fixed on one person, and one person only.

Hatim.

He rose from his seat, as if pulled by something stronger than duty.

Their eyes locked.

And for a long, soul-stirring moment, they spoke without words.

Regret.

Longing.

A thousand memories bursting into flame.

Hatim didn’t speak her name.

He didn’t need to.

Because in his eyes, she could already hear it.

And Sana… she didn’t bow, didn’t hesitate, didn’t flinch. Her chin was lifted high, her expression unreadable, but her gaze said it all.

"I never forgot you."

"Neither did I."

And in the grand courtroom of Chandlok, filled with royalty and guards and nobles—no one moved. Time itself seemed to freeze.

And the chapter closed with two hearts, once torn apart by fate, now staring at each other with fire, fear, and the silent hope… that maybe, destiny still had something left to say.
