Through the Looking Glass #3
“Stop them!” I cried, but Fredo stood there, mumbling something to Auty as she glared at me.
Turk was no better, waving me off and stomping off toward his house.
I turned toward Tyree and Rico and ran to them. Rico had Tyree on the ground, his shirt in one hand as he punched him repeatedly in the face.
“Get off him!” I shrieked, grabbing at his back.
He turned faster than I could realize, pushing me off him into the lawn. The wind was knocked out of me, which made him do a double take.
His scowl was murderous. His hand reached behind him, grabbing his gun before turning around and aiming it at Tyree.
“You ready to die ‘bout this bitch, Ty-Ty?”
“Ricky!” Fredo yelled, finally coming to rein in his brother.
But it was too late. I heard it in his tone.
“The pussy fire, so I give you that. But is you really ready to die ‘bout it?” His hand shot out, fisting his shirt and pulling a dazed Tyree up until the barrel of his gun was pressed into his cut forehead.
“Where. The fuck. Was she?!” he screamed.
“Rick, come on. Let it–”
“I ain’t letting shit go!” Rico let Tyree go to push Fredo away, then swung around to aim his gun at me.
“Don’t fuckin’ make me repeat myself, bitch. The fuck was you while you sold yo sister out to some wannabe pimps?!”
Fredo began yelling in Spanish, turning Rico’s head toward him to try to get him to listen.
I was paralyzed.
Tyree slowly got up, wiping blood off his face with his collar. His face was so twisted up as his eyes bounced around the scene, him lingering behind me for a long moment.
“Fuck you, bitch!” He hissed, pushing Rico as hard as he could. He stumbled, his finger pulling the trigger as he tried to regain balance.
I cried out upon hearing the gunshot. My ears were on fire, ringing taking over my hearing as I cupped them and stretched on my back.
I hoped I never heard another gunshot again, or ever be on the receiving end of one coming from him.
I stumbled to my feet, inching away from all of them and into my house, where I should have ran to in the first place. It was obvious that I was right in that Auty was done with me, and I didn’t blame her. Not one bit.
It only made sense that the others were done with me, too.
When I finally crossed the threshold, I turned to close the door. The lawn was cleared; Tyree’s car burned rubber to peel off, while Fredo drug Rico into Turk’s house.
I tried to close the door on Auty, but she sped up, and pushed me further inside before slamming the door shut.
“The hell is going on–”
We both turned at the sound of Dad’s voice and all three of us froze.
Mom walked out behind him, her face scrunching up at the sight of me.
“Pregnant, Wynter? Really?”
That seemed to break Dad out of his spell, but my attention whirled to Auty.
“I can’t believe you told!” I screeched.
“She didn’t have to. I found the doctor’s papers in your room. Is that where you were? Off galavanting with your baby’s daddy?”
Auty stomped around me to her room, slamming and locking the door.
Dad rushed over to me, pulling me into a tight hug.
I kept my hands at my sides, and watched Mom glare at me from over Dad’s shoulder.
“We were so worried. About you and your sister–”
“Speak for yourself, Aaron. I won’t have you fast ass girls up in my house–”
I cut her off with a laugh I couldn’t stop.
The clothes I was in didn’t fit because they were Pilar’s. My hair was in its natural state, since she’d spent the night before taking out my matted weave and trying to deep condition my hair. My ears had barely stopped ringing. And I was sure after that morning, I’d really be as alone as I felt.
And yet, the most ridiculous thing, had to have been Mom trying to be a mother.
I twisted out of Dad’s arms and snarled at her. “You’re a fucking joke, Amani. If anything, this is my house.”
“Now, Wyn–”
“Oh, fuck you, too,” I groaned. Shock flashed on Dad’s face before I began to walk toward my room.
“You’re both ridiculous,” I muttered.
“Watch your tone,” Mom tried, but I bristled.
I heard the slap before I felt it, but I still had the reflex to grip her shoulders and push her into the wall.
She screamed something. When I let her go, she tried to hit my face again, but I got to her first, slapping her across her cheek.
Hands grabbed me, pushing me back into the hallway before Dad came and held Mom away from me.
“You both disappeared for seven. Months. We were kids, and you both were gone. Be lucky I’m even still fucking alive.”
Dad’s grip on Mom loosened at his confusion, and she took advantage of it by getting in my face.
“You won’t be alive too much longer–”
I pushed her back into him, then gathered as much spit as I could and lobbed it in her face.
My audacity made her pause.
But I didn’t. I turned, went into my room, and slammed and locked the door behind me.
My room was a fucking mess. Things were everywhere, them going through everything. I went into my closet immediately, and opened the loose floorboards to grab the mini box. It had a combination lock on it, and when I opened it, the hold on my middle loosened just a tad.
My money was still there.
The leftover money Mom left when they abandoned us.
I placed my box back where it was and covered the loose floorboards with shoeboxes.
A firm knock sounded off my door, and I groaned, knowing I had to answer.
Dad stood in the hallway, so many questions in his eyes.
I let him in my room and closed the door behind him. He sat at my desk, while I climbed onto my unmade bed.
“You’ve been gone two weeks, Wyn. You gotta give me something. First Auty, then you… You both could have been killed.”
His voice cracked, as his eyes became red with unshed tears.
I never could get a read on him. It wasn’t like he stood up to his wife, or even was more present than she was.
But then I’d get tiny glimpses that he did actually care about the kids he helped make, though it made me more confused than anything.
“We went to a party and got separated,” I began, realizing I had to give him something.
“The people there, I think they wanted to hurt us. I was able to get away and lay low, but I didn’t know what happened to Auty for a while. But I know Turkey saved her, and the people who are responsible are taken care of.”
Dad’s jaw tensed. “Auty wants to press charges, but your mother–”
“They’re taken care of, Dad. They won’t be able to hurt us or anyone else.”
After a long moment, he accepted my answer, but we were nowhere near done. Not by the way his eyes softened.
“Wynnie,” he whispered. “You… you had an abortion?”
My eyes began to sting and I nodded once. “It was a mistake that won’t happen again. I handled it.”
Dad was up in an instant. He sat next to me and crushed me to his chest. “You shouldn’t have had to do that alone, Wynnie.”
Through everything, a hug from my Dad of course would do me in.
A violent sob wracked through my body as I held onto him as hard as he held onto me.
The last few weeks, no matter how plush Pooh’s mega mansion was, had did a number on me.
The last few years, if I was being honest.
Nonstop shit, I could trace back to my birth.
When would it end?
He held me for a while, apologizing for not being there, before telling me he accepted a new job that would have him on the road for most of the year.
And that Mom would be traveling with him.
After promising him that I was fine, and I didn't need to go to the hospital, he let me be.
I spent the entire day putting my room back together. After ordering a new phone for myself, I checked all my messages before taking down my MyRoom.
Right before I could turn off my computer, I got a new iMessage.
