eastcoleman:

Birdy?

Hey, Birdy, come on.

Be online.

Please.

mockingbird:

I’m here. Why the stress?

eastcoleman:

I’m not stressed, I’m freaking out!!

mockingbird:

Why, what happened?

Should I freak out with you or calm you down?

eastcoleman:

Do you remember that Liam Bellamy wrote to us? THE Liam Bellamy?

mockingbird:

Uh-oh. When you use caps like that, it’s got to be serious. But yeah, of course I remember. How could I forget?

eastcoleman:

He wants to come to Boston to discuss our future. To see if he can help us. Can you imagine that? Maybe we’ll actually get somewhere!

mockingbird:

Omg, Easton!!! That’s amazing. I’m so happy for you!

Do you know when?

eastcoleman:

No, not yet. Oh God, fuck. I don’t believe it.

mockingbird:

I do. You guys are so good! So, so good! And you know it.

eastcoleman:

Yes, but this is a totally new level. It’s all completely insane.

mockingbird:

I get that, but you deserve this. You all do.

eastcoleman:

Yeah, maybe.

mockingbird:

Not maybe. Definitely!

How long has the band been together?

eastcoleman:

We started when we were 15.

mockingbird:

Then think about how much time you’ve invested in music. You deserve it.

eastcoleman:

Okay, maybe you’re right. But there are other bands that invest a lot of time in their music and aren’t so lucky.

mockingbird:

That has nothing to do with you. By the way, you still haven’t told me how you got started.

eastcoleman:

It’s not that exciting.

mockingbird:

Tell me anyway.

eastcoleman:

It’s a big cliché.

mockingbird:

I don’t care. I love clichés.

eastcoleman:

*heavy sigh*

mockingbird:

Tell me!

eastcoleman:

Beck and I went to music school when we were kids.

Our mothers thought it would be good for us to learn to play instruments, so we’d have less time to get into trouble.

I’m not sure if they regretted it in hindsight.

In high school we met Colin and Jax. We had music class together, and the four of us were put in a group for a project.

Basically that was it. We got along and had fun together.

After the project, Beck asked if we wanted to continue, and none of us could imagine stopping.

Music connected us, even if that sounds corny (don’t laugh)!

In the beginning we just played covers, but I was always writing down my thoughts, even as a kid.

They were silly diary entries. Eventually they became lyrics, and then we started playing our songs.

mockingbird:

That sounds really nice.

eastcoleman:

It was. We enjoyed writing songs, and we finally found something we were good at. None of us were very good at school, but we could play and write songs well.

mockingbird:

You still can!

eastcoleman:

Now that I think about it, I’m getting a little nostalgic. Back then everything was simple. We felt free when we made music and nothing else mattered. Not school, not our parents, nothing. Just us and our instruments.

mockingbird:

Is it different now?

eastcoleman:

Yes, there’s more to it than there used to be. We have higher expectations of ourselves.

mockingbird:

You’ll get everything you want, I know it.

eastcoleman:

Do you really think so?

mockingbird:

I’m absolutely sure. You’ll achieve everything you want because you’re good. Besides, I’m not the only one who thinks so. Liam Bellamy is coming to Boston for you.

eastcoleman:

Yeah, that’s really amazing.

mockingbird:

It is, but above all, it’s totally deserved. Proud of you.
