Chapter 5 The Ritual

He mapped her cycle on a calendar.

She found it the third morning, pinned to the estate office wall. Her dates are in red, and his calculations are in blue. Notes in the margins detailed basal temperature, cervical position, and optimal timing windows. It was clinical, precise, and military-like.

Vesper stood before it, staring.

He'd tracked her since before the contract, before the storm. During their three days in the east wing, he asked casual questions: When was her last period? How long was her cycle? Was she regular? She answered without realizing he built a campaign.

She pulled the calendar from the wall and carried it to the kitchen.

He stood at the stove, shirtless and barefoot. He cooked eggs with the same focus he gave field operations. The pan, the flame, the spatula—every movement is precise.

"You made a calendar," she said.

He did not turn. "I made a plan."

"It has my cervical position on it."

"Predicted cervical position. I lack direct data on that yet."

She set the calendar on the counter. "You track my body like a military operation."

"I optimize our chances. The window is narrow. I do not want to waste it."

She watched him plate the eggs, add spinach, and something orange that she did not recognize.

"What is that?"

"Sweet potato. Beta carotene supports reproductive health." He set the plate before her. "Eat."

"I am not one of your soldiers."

"No. You are more important." He sat across from her, eating his plate without looking up.

She ate. The eggs were delicious. The sweet potato was better. She hated that she liked being fed.

This was the pattern he established every morning: a specific breakfast with proteins, nutrients, and things she'd never heard of. He researched, of course. He likely read every fertility study published in the last decade.

Every evening, dinner offered more nutrients and one glass of red wine. A study, which he cited and let her read, claimed moderate alcohol did not affect conception.

Every night, they went to his bedroom. The candles. The bed. Him.

Four nights so far. Four nights his body was inside hers. Four nights his mouth moved across her skin. Four nights his release filled her as she arched beneath him.

He was methodical, even in bed. He timed things and controlled the pace. He brought her to climax first, having read that uterine contractions during orgasm could aid sperm transport. Then he followed, deep, holding himself inside her, staying, and letting biology do its work.

She should have hated it. The clinical precision, the tracking, the optimization—she should have hated it. It was everything she feared: transactional, biological, a breeding program with candles.

But she did not hate it.

She craved it.

The fifth morning, she woke in his bed. He was already gone. She found him in the kitchen, following the same routine: eggs, spinach, and something green in a glass.

"Drink the smoothie," he said.

She picked up the glass. Sniffed. "What is it?"

"Wheatgrass. Folate. Iron. Supports ovulation."

"I hate wheatgrass."

"Drink it."

She drank it, then set the glass down.

"You're bossy," she said.

"I'm focused."

"Is there a difference?"

He looked at her. His green eyes were steady and hot. "The focus is for your body. The bossy one is just me."

She almost smiled.

That night, he came to her room. She had not expected him. She was reading in bed, wearing one of his shirts, when the door opened.

"I didn't knock," he said.

"I noticed."

"I should knock."

"You should."

He stayed in the doorway. His eyes moved over her, the shirt, her bare legs, and her hair on the pillow.

"Your temperature spiked this morning," he said. "You're at peak fertility. Tonight and tomorrow are the highest probability windows."

"You came to my room to give me a weather report on my uterus?"

"I came to your room because I can't stop thinking about you. The calendar states that this applies during the fertile window. "This night is the best night, and I want to be inside you."

His directness hit her like a wave. Heat flooded her body. She set her book down.

"Then come in," she said.

He closed the door and locked it. The sound was deliberate.

She watched him. He pulled his shirt over his head and dropped it. His chest caught the lamplight, revealing a scar, a tattoo, and muscle. He was already hard. She saw his thickness pressing against his pants.

"Take off the shirt," he said.

She pulled it over her head and sat bare from the waist up. Her nipples tightened in the cool air, from his gaze, or both.

"Lie back."

She did. He came over her but did not touch her yet. He hovered, his eyes tracing her body: her collarbone, her breasts, the dip of her waist, the scars below her navel. He'd kissed them every time before.

"I've been thinking about this all day," he said. "Since I made you breakfast. Since you drank that wheatgrass and made a face. Since you sat across from me at dinner and I could smell you."

"Smell me?"

"When you're ovulating, you smell different. Warmer. Sweeter." He lowered his head and pressed his nose against her throat. He inhaled. "Like this."

She shivered. She felt his breath on her skin and his weight above her, though he was not touching her yet.

"You're tracking my scent," she said.

"I'm tracking everything. Your temperature. Your moods. The way your body responds." His mouth moved to her ear. "The way you get wetter during your fertile window. The way you tighten around me when you're close. The way you say my name when you come."

Her breath caught. "That's not clinical."

"No. It stopped being clinical three days ago."

His mouth found her neck. He bit her neck with a sharp nip that made her gasp. Then he sucked on the spot, leaving a mark on her skin. She felt the blood rise, a bruise forming.

"Cillian," she breathed.

"I want you marked. See it tomorrow and remember tonight. Remember what we're doing."

His hands moved down, found her underwear, and pulled it off. His fingers found her, wet and ready. He groaned.

"So wet," he said. "Your body knows what it wants."

Her hips rose against his hand. His fingers pressed inside, one then two, stroking deeply. She gasped, gripping the sheets.

"Tell me what you want," he said.

"You. Inside me. Now."

"Not yet." His fingers moved slowly, pressing the spot that blurred her vision. "I want you desperate first."

"I'm already desperate."

"Not enough." His thumb found her clit, pressed, and circled. She cried out, her body arching off the bed.

He worked her with his fingers, stroking and pressing. His mouth found her breast, sucking and licking. His tongue swirled around her nipple while his fingers drove her higher. She trembled. The pressure built, tight and hot.

"Come for me," he said against her skin. "First one. Then I'll be inside you for the rest."

She broke. The climax hit her like a wave. Her body shuddered, her walls clenching around his fingers. A trembling cry broke from her throat. She gripped his shoulders, her nails digging in.

He did not stop. His fingers continued to move, drawing out the pleasure and extending the waves of sensation until she shook.

Then he pulled his hand away and positioned himself. His cock pressed against her opening, thick and rigid, the head slick.

"Look at me," he said.

She opened her eyes. His face was above hers, dark green eyes hungry and possessive.

"This isn't a transaction," he said. "Not anymore."

He pressed inside, sliding deep, filling her and stretching her. She cried out. He was thick; her body opened around him and took him in. When he was fully inside, he stilled.

His forehead pressed against hers. His breath came in ragged gasps. She felt him throbbing inside her, hot and firm.

"Mine," he said, the word low and rough. "This body. This womb. Mine."

The word should have made her furious and should have felt like ownership. Instead, it made her clench around him, made her wetter, and made her hips rise to take him deeper.

"Yes," she whispered. "Yours."

He moved, slow at first, and deep. Each thrust pressed him to the hilt. Each stroke dragged against the places that made her gasp. She wrapped her legs around him and pulled him closer, deeper.

His mouth found her neck again, biting, sucking, and marking. His hands gripped her hips and held her still while he drove into her. The pace quickened. His hips snapped forward, hard, claiming.

"You feel that?" he said. "Feel me inside you? Feel me filling you?"

"Yes," she gasped. "God, yes."

"I want my seed inside you. I want it to take. I want to watch your belly grow and know I put that child there."

His words pushed her over. A powerful climax hit. Her body shuddered. Her walls clutched around him. She cried out, a broken gasp. Her body gripped him and pulled him deeper.

He followed. His rhythm broke. His hips drove forward. One final, deep thrust. She felt him thicken, then the hot spurts of his release. It filled her, spilling. He groaned, a broken sound. His body shuddered. His arms shook.

He did not pull out. He stayed, pressed deep. His cock pulsed inside her. She felt every spurt—hot, thick, claiming her from the inside.

His mouth found her ear. "Stay still. Let it take."

She stayed, her legs wrapped around him, holding him inside. Her body trembled. His body lay heavy on hers. The room was quiet except for their breathing.

"Again," she said.

He lifted his head and looked at her. "Again?"

"The window. You said tonight and tomorrow. We should do it again."

A slow, dangerous smile spread across his face. "Give me ten minutes."

"Five."

He laughed, a low, rough sound she'd never heard before. "You're going to kill me."

"What a way to go."

He kissed her, deep and slow. His tongue tangled with hers. She felt him start to harden inside her again. He was still there, still filling her up.

She rolled her hips. He groaned against her mouth.

"Five minutes," she said. "Starting now."

The next two days blurred.
