🌩️ Chapter Twenty two Omen on the PierPart Two Courtesy on the Quay

"The sea can smell fear.

Courts can smell weakness."

Courtesyon the Quay

POV:Rhaenys Targaryen

The Braavosi knew how to arrive.

Not loudly.

Loudness belonged to conquerors.

Braavos preferred confidence.

The flagship glided toward Driftmark's great quay with the quiet precision of a blade sliding into its sheath. Its dark hull reflected the afternoon sun in long ribbons of gold, while polished brass caught the light like scattered coins.

Every rope landed exactly where it should.

Every sailor moved with practiced economy.

No shouting.

No confusion.

Only discipline.

Rhaenys respected that.

She distrusted it more.

? ? ?

High Tide had dressed itself for diplomacy.

Velaryon banners rolled lazily in the sea breeze.

Servants lined the pier in fresh livery.

Guards stood motionless beneath silver-crested helms.

Corlys waited at the center of it all.

The Sea Snake.

Unmoving.

As though the tide itself had chosen to wear a man's face.

Rhaenys stood beside him.

Laena at her right.

Laenor at her left.

Storm just behind them.

Exactly where they had agreed.

Visible.

Never central.

? ? ?

The gangplank lowered.

A young man descended first.

He could not have seen more than twenty summers.

Tall.

Elegant.

Beautiful in the polished way expensive things were beautiful.

Dark blue velvet embroidered in silver thread.

Black leather gloves.

A jeweled signet resting comfortably upon his hand.

He smiled before his boots reached Driftmark's stone.

A practiced smile.

One that had won many rooms.

? ? ?

"The son of the Sealord," the herald announced.

The young Braavosi bowed.

Gracefully.

Perfectly.

"My Lord Corlys."

His Common Tongue carried only the faintest Braavosi accent.

"A privilege beyond measure."

Corlys inclined his head.

"You honor my house."

The prince smiled wider.

"I have heard that often."

? ? ?

Rhaenys noticed it.

The smallest thing.

He had answered the courtesy...

instead of returning it.

Interesting.

? ? ?

His eyes found Laena almost immediately.

Not rudely.

Professionally.

Assessing.

The way merchants inspected gemstones before purchase.

Storm saw it too.

Rhaenys didn't need to look.

She felt the air tighten behind her.

Barely.

Enough.

? ? ?

"Laena Velaryon."

The prince bowed again.

"My lady."

Laena answered flawlessly.

"My lord."

Every lesson Rhaenys had ever forced upon her daughter appeared in that single greeting.

Perfect posture.

Perfect smile.

Perfect lie.

? ? ?

Then—

the prince reached for her hand.

Not unusual.

Not inappropriate.

Expected.

Laena offered it.

Because duty demanded it.

He lifted her fingers.

Held them.

One heartbeat longer than courtesy required.

? ? ?

Storm's breathing changed.

Only once.

Rhaenys heard it anyway.

? ? ?

The prince released Laena.

Finally.

Then looked toward Corlys.

"I have heard Driftmark produces the finest ships in the known world."

Corlys smiled politely.

"It also produces strong daughters."

Something flickered behind the prince's eyes.

Gone before anyone else noticed.

Rhaenys did.

Storm did.

? ? ?

The introductions continued.

Merchants.

Captains.

Advisers.

Braavosi nobles.

Each smile carefully measured.

Each word chosen.

Every conversation another move on a cyvasse board.

? ? ?

Then the prince noticed Storm.

Or rather—

he noticed the person no one had yet explained.

His eyes lingered.

Just long enough.

"The lady?"

Corlys answered before anyone else could.

"A distant cousin from Lys."

"Lady Ororo."

The prince inclined his head politely.

Storm returned the gesture.

Nothing more.

? ? ?

His gaze remained on her a heartbeat longer.

Curiosity.

Nothing dangerous.

Not yet.

Then—

the wind changed.

BadLuck Wears Perfume

POV:Storm/Ororo

She smelled it before anyone else noticed.

The perfume.

Expensive.

Layered.

Amber.

Jasmine.

Citrus.

Wine.

Hidden beneath it—

rot.

Not decay.

Weakness.

A body pretending to be healthier than it was.

Storm's stomach tightened.

? ? ?

The prince laughed at something Corlys said.

His heartbeat skipped.

Recovered.

Skipped again.

His left hand flexed unconsciously.

Tiny.

Invisible.

Unless you knew what living bodies sounded like.

Storm knew.

? ? ?

He's ill.

The realization came without judgment.

Only certainty.

Not dying.

Not today.

But something inside him was wrong.

Something long ignored.

? ? ?

She looked away immediately.

It wasn't her business.

It couldn't become her business.

She was here to protect Laena.

Not diagnose princes.

? ? ?

The receiving procession began moving toward High Tide.

Servants carried trunks.

Sailors unloaded gifts.

Braavosi guards remained perfectly aligned.

Everything orderly.

Everything graceful.

Everything...

too controlled.

? ? ?

A pressure pocket formed above the harbor.

Storm felt it instantly.

Warm air colliding with sea air.

Perfectly natural.

Perfectly ordinary.

She ignored it.

Rhaenys' words echoed clearly.

Let the weather be weather.

? ? ?

The collision strengthened.

Clouds thickened.

Not because of her.

Because summer was summer.

She kept walking.

Hands folded.

Eyes lowered.

She did...

nothing.

? ? ?

The first gust hit without warning.

Sharp enough to snap banners.

Braavosi silk strained violently.

Servants grabbed hats.

Several ladies squealed.

The prince looked upward, annoyed.

? ? ?

Storm did not interfere.

She refused.

The wind belonged to itself today.

? ? ?

Then—

one enormous spray of sea water exploded against the pier.

Not miraculous.

Simply unfortunate.

It drenched exactly one person.

The prince.

? ? ?

Silence.

Complete silence.

Water streamed from velvet sleeves.

His perfect hair clung immediately to his forehead.

Perfume vanished beneath honest saltwater.

Someone coughed.

Someone else failed to hide a smile.

? ? ?

Laena looked downward immediately.

Storm recognized the danger.

If she looked at the prince—

she would laugh.

? ? ?

The prince forced a smile.

"An... enthusiastic welcome."

Corlys answered without missing a beat.

"The Narrow Sea greets everyone equally."

Several captains nodded solemnly.

None dared smile.

? ? ?

Storm felt something else.

Static.

Tiny.

Invisible.

Prickling across her fingertips.

The weather wanted her.

Wanted guidance.

Wanted permission.

She refused.

Again.

And again.

? ? ?

They reached High Tide's great doors.

Servants hurried ahead.

Braziers were lit.

Fresh towels appeared almost magically.

The prince accepted them with practiced dignity.

But irritation had already entered the room before he had.

? ? ?

Dinner preparations began.

Musicians tuned quietly.

Wine flowed.

Conversations resumed.

Yet the atmosphere had changed.

Almost imperceptibly.

Storm felt it.

The room no longer welcomed him.

It merely tolerated him.

? ? ?

As everyone settled into polite conversation, the prince leaned toward Laena.

"You'll enjoy Braavos."

Not—

if.

When.

Storm's jaw tightened.

? ? ?

Laena smiled exactly as she had been taught.

"I'm certain it is beautiful."

"It is."

He smiled warmly.

"You'll grow accustomed to it quickly."

Storm looked at her plate.

She knew that sentence.

She had heard versions of it her entire life.

You'll adjust.

You'll understand.

You'll learn your place.

? ? ?

The silverware vibrated.

Just once.

Barely enough to hear.

Storm inhaled slowly.

Forced herself to relax.

Not here.

Not now.

? ? ?

Rhaenys looked across the table.

Their eyes met.

Only for a heartbeat.

The older woman gave the smallest shake of her head.

Hold.

Storm understood.

? ? ?

She released the tension.

The tiny vibration stopped.

The room breathed again.

No one seemed to notice.

Except Corlys.

Except Rhaenys.

And perhaps...

one Braavosi captain whose eyes lingered on the goblet a fraction too long.

? ? ?

Dinner continued.

Laughter returned.

Music softened the edges.

Conversation flowed like wine.

Outwardly—

everything had gone perfectly.

Inwardly—

the weather had almost answered.

? ? ?

As Rhaenys rose from the table, she felt the air ease by the smallest fraction.

Like a blade sliding back into its sheath.

Not gone.

Merely waiting.

For now.
