7. Chapter Six
Chapter Six
Scarlett
Discovering Sapphire found her asshole ex via that hook-up app for Betas, the human cesspool that is Every Beta, isn’t exactly a big surprise.
That app has the worst reputation for Alpha-leaning Beta-holes.
She probably would have had better luck finding a guy if she tossed a dart out of her window and dated whoever it happened to hit.
I raise an eyebrow as she shows me his page.
“You met the guy on a dating app?”
She shakes her head. “Nope. That’s just where he was fishing for other women while we were together.”
She lets me take the phone from her, and I frown at his stupid smug face.
“Ugh. What a dog, and not the cute kind. He deserves to be put down.”
The page is typically awful. His profile is full of fake-ass shots of his oiled-up body taken from the best angles at the gym, using soft lighting filters of course, to make it less obvious he’s not that jacked.
Worst of all, he’s got the two worst words any guy can write on their Every Beta profile: Omegas Preferred.
Alpha-Leaning-Asshole. He wouldn’t know what a real Alpha looked like if one of them smacked him in that superior little face of his. He certainly didn’t understand he had a real, gorgeous, smart and wonderful Omega before he fucked this relationship up by being his charmless Beta self.
Seething isn’t the word for how I’m feeling looking at his dumb fucking face.
“Wait …” I look up at my sister. “Saph, you have a profile on here …”
God. Don’t tell me this is how she expects to find another guy.
This one was bad enough.
A lot of the others on this app are bound to be even worse.
“Yeah, I know. I made it after I found his, so I could dump him through it.”
I click into her profile. “Ah. So that’s why your profile states no matches with guys named Ben.”
She holds out her hand. “Pretty much. I should delete it.”
“Hold up,” I tell her, as my gaze falls on her inbox. “You have like fifty-six messages from matches.”
“What?” she asks, eyes widening. “I made that profile this morning.”
“Well, you do share my good looks,” I tell her, with a smile. I’m curious now, about who might have messaged her. “Most of them are probably dick pics, though. Let me check …”
I hesitate when I see there’s a message from Ben.
Clearly, Sapphire had real feelings for him.
I don’t know if I should tell her. Then, I realize I need to.
Protecting her from stuff is my go-to move, but she’s a grown-ass woman, just like I am, and she deserves to be allowed to make her own choices.
I let out a sigh. “Oh, shit. You have a new message from that bitch Ben.”
“What?” she asks, sounding shocked.
“I should delete it,” I tell her, still tempted to do it.
“No, let me see it,” she insists, a little more desperately than I’d like.
Ugh. Please don’t let her give him another chance. He doesn’t deserve one.
“Just remember, the guy’s an asshole.”
I pass the phone back to her.
She takes it and I watch her open the message.
“What a dickhead,” I mutter while his words provoke her anger, stirring it to rise to the surface, dampening her sadness.
I hope that means he screwed things up for himself even more.
Unlike the hallway neighbor guy I just helped, Ben does not deserve a second chance.
Break my sister’s heart once, shame on you.
Break it twice, and I’ll break something precious of yours.
She makes an angry little sound and then her expression slackens.
“Shit,” she murmurs, staring at the screen.
Now, she’s freaking out.
“What?” I ask, moving to look over her shoulder.
“I didn’t mean to do that. I just …”
I read through the message he sent her.
I’m sorry you couldn’t handle the truth, Saffy. I thought we had something special. I thought you knew you were my number one. I never told you we were exclusive.
God, what an absolute prick.
Then, I reach the message she sent him back in response.
You’re a liar, and I’m glad I’m done with you. Oh, and by the way, I’m an Omega, you fucking idiot.
It takes a second to figure out what she’s so worried about.
Right. She’s supposed to be living like she’s a Beta.
That means her Omega status is a secret, and now she thinks he knows.
“Oh, that. I wouldn’t worry about that. There’s no way he’ll believe it.”
She stares at me like I’ve grown two heads.
“Men are all the same, Saph. He knows you as a Beta and he thinks he knows everything. He’ll just think you’re trying to make him regret his actions. You didn’t just out yourself as an Omega.”
It seems to take a few seconds for that to sink in, but she does start to relax once she’s thought it over. It makes sense, because that’s exactly how assholes like Ben think, and she knows it.
“Trust me,” I add.
She shakes her head at me, groaning lightly. “That’s not the reassurance you think it is, Scar.”
I laugh, because it is definitely one of those phrases I used a lot whenever I had some kind of dumbass plan as a teenager. “Oh, come on, Saph. We were kids the last time I asked you to trust me for a bad reason. This is completely different.”
“Is it?” she asks, almost jumping out of her skin when her phone starts ringing in her hand.
She looks down at it as if it just bit her. “It’s him. It’s Ben.”
I take the phone out of her hand. “He doesn’t deserve to be heard out, okay? Not one more word between the two of you. Cut him off, and he’ll crawl back under his rock and stay there. Don’t give him a chance to worm his way back in.”
“I wasn’t …” she starts, cutting herself short when I raise my eyebrows at her.
She’s too soft to ignore him if he persists, and she knows it.
“You just need to be tough for a little bit, okay?”
I end his call and block his number.
“I’m glad you’re here, Scar.”
“Me too. It’s been way too long,” I admit, smiling at my sister.
“Tell me things are going better with you than they have been here?” she asks, clearly desperate to hear something that’ll distract her from her own problems.
I might not have a nice little romantic tale to deliver, but I’m not without my own problems.
Luckily for Sapphire those problems are mildly amusing for anyone who isn’t me.
“Well, that kind of depends on what you mean by better.”
“Sounds like a long story.” Her eyes brighten.
“Well, then it’s a good thing we’ve got plenty of popcorn.”
