Chapter Forty
Scarlett
Sinking down into the plush leather seat, I exhale slowly.
I don’t know how I could have been so stupid.
Sapphire was always the smart one.
She knew this was a horrible idea, and I convinced her otherwise.
Hell, even after she got upset on that phone call, I didn’t think better of this.
I should have listened to her. I should have actually heard what she was saying.
We’ve barely seen each other in years, and instead of trying to spend time talking her through a tough time, I suggested a life swap.
Like that was going to solve anything.
It never has in the past.
All it ever did was upset Saph.
And now I’m feeling that same consequence for the first time.
I wish I knew how to be a better sister.
My tears take their time to dry up, which really isn’t me.
I’m used to getting a little bruised up and brushing off the hurt.
Rushing into the next fun thing and leaving my pain in the dust.
Too bad there’s nothing to run to out here, except four hot guys I absolutely can’t have.
It stung badly enough to hear Kian flip his answer on something as trivial as a color.
I don’t think I can handle anything worse than that.
Closing my eyes, I try my hardest to take a nap.
A few minutes of calm is all I manage, before I’m emotional all over again.
Ugh. This sucks.
It’s worse than that crazy amazing offer I had to turn down.
This is also something that’s being dangled right in front of me that I can’t have.
The difference is money doesn’t feel important.
I don’t care if I never make millions.
I make enough to keep going playing my guitar in bars, singing covers.
But to be here with these men and to have them like a version of me who isn’t me …
It’s like a knife to the heart.
In fact, if I’m being completely honest, it felt bad before it even hit me that Kian was into it.
I want to be talking to them about music. I want to sing with them.
But most of all, right now, I want to take my damn hair down.
I start pulling out the clips that are keeping it up.
They’re way too tight.
The release is what finally brings a smile back to my lips.
Whatever was making me so damn emotional starts to calm the fuck down.
It feels so incredibly good to let my hair fall around my shoulders, messy and loose.
Sighing, I put the clips down on the table and let myself relax back into the headrest.
Maybe now I could take a nap.
It doesn’t sound like a bad idea.
