Chapter Fifty-Two

Xane

Safety checks are tedious, but I go through each of them carefully, knowing it’s on me if anything goes wrong.

I want to be back in the air before this time tomorrow and even if I know the jet didn’t take any damage when we landed, I decide I need to fully go through everything at least twice before we take off.

Once today, once right before take-off.

I start with an inspection the exterior of the jet, then I run a thorough check of the cockpit instruments. So far, so good.

It’s not until I get to the fuel levels that I realize I made a huge mistake this morning.

There’s not enough fuel in the tank to get us back to Cressidan City.

The level is way off.

I must have turned the numbers around in my head when I did the checks before take-off.

Usually, I put in enough fuel for the whole journey, return included.

It wouldn’t really be a problem, if we’d actually landed on Golden Sands’ arrival strip.

The private airport may be small, but they have fuel stocks.

I’m not sure we’d even make it from here to the resort’s strip using the jet.

It’s a short distance, sure, but we have a hill start and I’d need to circle around once we got into the air by which time we’d be running on empty.

It’s not impossible, but I can’t say I like our chances.

I groan as I lean back in the seat.

This is some of the stupidest shit I’ve ever done.

There’s no excuse for getting that wrong.

If we’d run out on the way, we might have crash-landed for real.

It’s not a mistake I can forgive myself for and forget about.

I sit in the pilot’s chair for a while, feeling guilty as hell.

We’re stranded for real, and it’s entirely my fault.

I fucked up the safety checks.

Then, I made it worse by landing on the deserted side of the island.

I get up slowly and close the door on the cockpit before I leave the jet.

The thought of telling everyone makes me weary.

It doesn’t matter.

We’re no longer hanging out here, worry-free, to let my pack get the chance to know a woman who may or may not be our fated mate. We’re now on a time crunch to come up with a plan to get to the other side of the island while we still have supplies.

I hope Kian prepared well for a long stay, because if he didn’t, we might really be screwed.
