Chapter Sixty-Six

Kian

It’s good to know there’s something I can do to make Scarlett smile.

Too bad this one bag of marshmallows is all I have out here.

I’m sure when Trick and Xane come back, they’ll demolish most of these without a second thought.

I’ll have to be sneaky to make sure I have a few left to share with Scarlett again later, when she might need the mood booster.

I don’t think anyone’s looking forward to the four-day trek through the jungle.

That’s gonna be a grind. Tonight’s our only shot at having a nice relaxing moment before we’re all in crappier moods in stifling heat, moving through a forest that we don’t know much about.

It sucks that Xane upset Scarlett so much that she made a hasty decision with her suppressants, but that feels like another sign he wasn’t ready for any of this.

If I’d been more patient, none of this would have happened.

True mates are destined to meet, so the chances are it would have happened somewhere down the line if I hadn’t interfered. Fate had a plan, in other words, and I ignored that.

So, the least I can do is hoard some marshmallows to help make her feel better when we’re tired out in the wilderness.

I take off my shirt and put it down next to the bag.

Scarlett sucks in a breath, and I realize this might be the first time she’s seeing me topless.

Riley and Xane are used to flashing their upper bodies on stage.

Trick and I don’t ever do that, and we’ve never had pictures taken like that either.

I wouldn’t say I’m shredded. I have good muscle tone and definition.

“It’s too warm this close to the fire,” I lie.

She’s staring, and I like it.

Her gaze is hungry.

She gives me a good look over, and then she seems to remember her marshmallow.

Looking away, she goes back to it, holding a hand under the remaining part while she eats.

When her tongue flicks out, it gives me all kinds of saucy thoughts.

My pants get tight in the crotch.

Better get used to it.

My mate-to-be is sexy-as-hell.

I adjust myself and start toasting a second marshmallow to take my mind off the beauty at my side.

I glance at Riley’s spot by the trees, softly lit by the lantern.

I can see a vague shape his size so he hasn’t moved much.

Not surprised. He won’t get hungry until after he’s had all the booze he can get his hands on.

He might even nap a little bit first. Not soundly.

He doesn’t really pass out from drinking.

That’ll be fun, having to coax him to get up and come get into a tent in front of the jet when Xane decides it’s time to make him behave.

I sneak four marshmallows onto my shirt when Scarlett’s busy eating, folding it up next to the big bag of treats. No one’s gonna know I still have these emergency marshmallows.

I look back in the direction of the jet.

Trick and Xane are taking way too long.

It’s making me wonder what the hell they’re up to.

They’ll be back soon.

Though I hope not too soon.
