Chapter Seventy
Scarlett
It’s a relief when Trick comes back to the campfire without Xane. Kian’s been distracting me pretty well on his own but having both of them by my side makes me feel a whole lot better.
I don’t know how either of them will feel if my perfume doesn’t come back.
They seem like sweet guys, but I’m not sure many Alphas would want a defective Omega.
I wish I’d paid more attention to Omega stuff now, instead of ignoring it like it didn’t matter. At least if I’d done that, I would have known the dangers of those pills.
But if I’m really honest with myself, even if I’d known, I might still have taken the risk.
It’s crazy, and dumb, but I can’t always stop myself from doing the stupid thing when I’m at the mercy of an emotionally driven impulse.
Yeah. I would have taken those pills, either way.
When I shook the bottle, four fell into my palm.
The decision was already made.
Nothing would have gotten me to change my planned actions.
This is what you’ve wanted, basically your whole life.
That’s only the truth, but I don’t think it’s what I want anymore.
Funny how everything can change in a single moment.
If I don’t get my perfume back, it’ll be my own fault, and I’ll lose the only men I’ve ever been attracted to in a way that would make me interested in forever.
“Hey,” Trick says as he sits back down next to me. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to be gone so long.”
“That’s okay. Did you get something to eat?”
“I grabbed a sandwich. It was actually pretty good,” he admits, gaze moving past me to Kian.
“Told you,” Kian says, before he holds out the next marshmallow’s stick toward Trick.
“I think I’m full,” Trick tells him. “Why did you take your shirt off?”
“It’s the style these days,” Kian jokes. “We’re both on trend now. Take the marshmallow.”
Sighing, Trick takes it.
“Not into sweets?” I ask, curious.
“I’m just not into Kian copying me.”
Kian snorts. “Get a life. I spilled beer on my shirt. I’m no one’s copycat. I have my own style.”
“Fine,” Trick says. “Whatever.”
Kian starts toasting another marshmallow.
We’re all quiet for a few seconds while Trick eats his marshmallow.
Then, Xane walks out of the woods, and my stomach churns.
I’m still mad at him, so when he only slows down to tell us he’s going to check on Riley, I’m relieved that I don’t have to be civil for the sake of my guys.
He’s still their lead Alpha.
And I might not be their type once they realize my ability to make them desperate to knot me is no longer available.
It would suck pretty hard to be given that taste of a future with Trick, only to have it whipped away because I did a dumb thing, but the way my life has been going lately, it feels more likely than a happier outcome.
“Are you gonna tell Trick?” Kian asks me quietly, while Trick is busy eating.
I guess I should. Xane isn’t here, and he doesn’t deserve to know what he goaded me into.
I nod slowly. “Yeah. Let him finish and I will.”
Hopefully Riley is keeping Xane busy.
Trick hands the cleaned skewer back to Kian.
“What’s going on?” he asks, sounding vaguely suspicious.
I look at Kian and he nods encouragingly.
When I look back at Trick, he’s sitting up straighter.
“Did you two …” he starts, looking from me to Kian and back again.
“No, but we’re gonna,” I admit, because I need to know he’s really cool with it, too. “And this isn’t about that.”
“Then, what is it about?”
