Chapter One-Hundred-Twenty-Two

Scarlett

Xane is asleep the second his head hits the pillow.

It’s no wonder he’s exhausted. He’s been working so hard for so long, thinking it’s what he needed to do, when what he really needed was a break.

I stroke his hair back from his face and kiss his cheek before I lie down on the side of the bed closest to the door.

He’s snoring lightly within minutes.

The mattress on the floor takes up most of the rest of the space in the room.

There’s a little bit of space around the door, and that’s about it.

Trick enters the room and I smile at him.

“Hey,” I whisper.

“Hey,” he whispers back, leaning in to kiss me.

I kiss back, and he smiles when we break apart.

“Don’t let Kian talk you into letting him in beside you.”

I laugh softly. “I won’t.”

“He can be persuasive.”

“I know.”

He strips down to his underwear, leaving his clothes in a tidy bundle on the floor by the side of the mattress.

I can’t help but stare. It’s kinda hard to believe we’re mated.

It’s all so new, and so surreal.

He gets under the sheets, and I close my eyes.

It’s gonna be impossible to sleep. It doesn’t matter that I’m tired. I’m in bed next to Xane Orion, the lead singer of Chaos Burning. The only band I’ve ever loved.

It’s absolutely insane.

A few minutes later, the door opens again, and Kian walks into the room with a bag that’s lightly clinking in his hand. He puts it down quietly and closes the door.

“Can you turn off these lights?” Trick asks, keeping his voice soft.

“Yeah, yeah,” Kian murmurs. “Gimme a minute.”

He turns to me, and kneels by the side of the bed, arms going up under his chin while he gazes at me. “Sweet dreams,” he says, before he kisses me goodnight.

I’m surprised, and only vaguely disappointed that he doesn’t try to sneak into bed beside me.

If he did that, there’s no way we would sleep, and there’s no way whatever we did wouldn’t wake Xane up.

We all know Xane needs rest.

Kian hits the lights and it’s suddenly pitch black in the small room.

I hear him stumbling around, having a whisper argument with Trick before they settle.

Then it’s just dark and quiet, and I’m able to let sleep claim me.
