Day 8

Driving around gives me a lot of time to think, and currently, storefronts, malls, and billboards are the things that occupy my head. I try to imagine explaining them to someone who has never experienced Earth; an alien, maybe.

This? It’s a skincare brand. No, it’s not something necessary for humans. We just hate the thought of looking old. Why? Well, I’m not really sure.

The same imaginary conversation plays on loop in my head in different variations. Now that the world is empty, so many things are pointless. Fashion. Makeup. Medicine—other than any basic treatments I’ll have to self-administer just to keep myself alive.

The list goes on and on with every billboard I pass, growing even as I leave towns and cities and drive through stretches of wilderness. Politics. Wars. Borders. The idea of nations, of ownership. Religion.

Jewelry. Lingerie. Art. Social media—social anything, really.

Everything shrinks to a pointless background, leaving only primal, immediate needs. The three facets of survival; food, water, shelter.

It’s amazing how easy it was for us to believe anything else really matters.
