Day 30 (hike day 5)

It looks like we’ll be done with the trail on time—maybe even a little early going by what he said.

He even sounded a little impressed by the speed at which we’re progressing.

I just shrugged as if his approval wasn’t a big deal to me, even though my shoulder is killing me from sleeping on the forest floor.

The tent and the sleeping bag aren’t much of a comfort, but I’ll suck it up.

We called an early night and now we’re just… by the fire. I’d say ‘chilling’, but he’s sharpening knives as I write this, so maybe that’s not the right term.

We didn’t talk much today, and he’s had this contemplative, faraway look on his face since we watched the sunrise this morning, but the silence wasn’t an angry one. For a change. It’s been easier, laid back, and I think we both let ourselves get lost in our heads a little.

If it wasn’t for his rules, I think I would have wanted to talk, though.

To really tell him about myself. But it’s mostly him who I wish would fill the silence; he’s right there next to me every minute of the day, and yet the distance we keep from each other is… palpable. Like a deep, ominous gorge.

I’ll try asking him about it tomorrow. We’d make a better team if we got to know each other, I think. Maybe if I frame it that way he’ll agree.
