Chapter 8

Daniel

Lydia hesitated despite the fact that she was clearly tempted by the offer. I was right—she wanted to be in a quiet place.

And I want to see her more often.

When Madelyne and Lydia had left, I called in my PA, Chris, and updated him on what was happening.

Our floor had Dianne at reception beside the waiting area and meeting room, Chris’s smaller office, which connected to mine, and a desk outside the open space, which was empty.

Lately, both Chris and Dianne complained about needing help on the floor, so it was perfect.

It was thanks to Becca, if I’m honest, with her teasing about hiring Lydia as a PA.

I couldn’t promote her to be my PA since I was happy with Chris, and I wasn’t sure she was even qualified, but she could definitely be an office assistant.

I was also interested in having her around, though I doubted anything would ever happen between us when she didn’t seem the least bit interested in me.

Don’t forget she’s scared of you.

There’s that. I could see it sometimes in her eyes and body language. Maybe if she worked with me, she’d get used to me. I could understand why a woman, especially a petite woman, would feel threatened around a man who was much bigger than her.

My phone buzzed.

?? Don was a ‘good boy’ today. I think the deal’s going through! Drinks later?

I shook my head.

?? Only if you promise not to give me the details.

?? If we’re not going to be talking shop, how about you invite a ranger buddy of yours?

I groaned.

?? I’m not setting my sister up with any of my ‘ranger buddies’ and they know damn well sisters are off limits

That was a lie. I’d be more worried about my friends than Becca.

?? You’re no fun. I guess I’ll have to test out on my own if Jake’s a stickler for the rules

?? Becca. EW.
