25. The Pull #2

Max looks at me. "A five-hundred-year-old banking house does not use the word patient as a compliment. It is a statement of capacity. They have waited sixty years since the 1963 arrangement. They are telling us they can wait longer, or they can stop waiting. The choice is ours."

The formal notice is deferred pending the meeting. It is not withdrawn. The word Benedetti used, Max tells me, was sospeso. Suspended. Not resolved.

Max across the desk. The custody hearing is in six days. The SEAL allegation is on the record. The declaration is drafted. And now a Florentine institution that has been waiting since before any of us were born has told us, politely, that the waiting has a limit.

I think about Nonno at his worktable in 1963, writing the acknowledgment with one hand and the limiting notation with the other. He knew this conversation was coming. He just did not know who would be sitting at the desk when it arrived.

"After the ruling," I say. "Florence after the ruling."

"Yes," Max says. "After the ruling." Managing the pull, tugging at him from different angles.

Neither of us says what we are both thinking, which is that after the ruling the Marchesi will still be there, and the Banco Ombroso will still be there.

And the five hundred years of patience will still be there.

Some things do not resolve on a court calendar.

They resolve on their own schedule, and we are now on it.

Thursday afternoon I sit at the studio desk with the two letters side by side: Mamma's and Max's. I read them both. Do not need to. Have them memorized. Read them anyway. Then fold them together, slide them into the drawer, and go to the garden.

Max and Matteo are at the fort. Matteo is showing Max something about the roof configuration, pointing without explaining technically. Max is holding what Matteo points to. Elena is on the step below them, offering opinions that neither of them has solicited, which does not stop her.

I stand at the garden door for a moment, watching them.

Mamma's note said: Lorenzo is the key. What it means that Mamma wrote that and understood it would take years to find the right reading of it.

All the things that were being built in 1963 that are still standing now, and whether this is one of them.

Back inside. A declaration to finish.

Alex, The Night Before

The children are asleep upstairs. Bellamare is quiet, the staff long since withdrawn for the night. Only the fire remains alive in the great stone hearth, burning low and casting warm gold and deep shadow across the room.

I have been watching Max for nearly an hour. He sits with his hands clasped between his knees, staring into the flames. This is not the courtroom version of him. This is the man carrying tomorrow’s ruling in silence.

He speaks without looking at me.

"Elena is not my biological daughter," he says quietly.

"The ex-wife knows you know. The judge has the full record.

" He pauses, jaw tight. "Five years of chosen fatherhood against one biological fact.

I have prepared for everything I can. I cannot prepare for a judge who decides that what I chose does not count the same as what I am. "

He says it once. He does not repeat it.

I know words of comfort are not what he needs right now. So I rise from my chair and walk to him. The fire has burned down to glowing coals, painting everything in soft amber.

I stop in front of him. Max lifts his gaze, dark and tired and hungry. Without speaking, I slide onto his lap, straddling him on the wide leather chair. His hands settle on my hips, steadying me as I settle against him.

For a long moment we simply look at each other. Then I lean in and kiss him, slow and deep. He exhales against my mouth, as if he has been holding that breath for hours. His hands slide under my silk blouse, palms warm against my bare back, pulling me closer.

It is the summer. The unhurried quality of those three months before everything cost what it cost, before I left, before the nine years.

I unbutton his shirt slowly and push it off his shoulders so I can feel the heat of his skin, marking his chest with my mouth as I lay it bare. Max kisses my throat, then lower, his mouth warm and patient.

He peels my blouse away, then my bra, letting them fall. When his lips close over my breast and suck softly, a quiet moan slips from me. His hand strokes down my side, over my hip, then between my thighs, touching me with slow, knowing strokes until I am trembling and ready for him.

"Max," I breathe, my fingers threading through his hair.

I stand and free him from his trousers, then his boxers. I feel him, big, hard and heavy against my breasts. I kneel in front of him and savor the sweet musk from his bush and run my tongue under his balls. He groans and I smile into his shaft.

I stroke him slowly, my thumb brushing his sensitive head, already moist, savoring the way his breath catches when I lick him. I take him into my mouth and flick my tongue on his sensitive head. He arches back encouraging me to take him deeper.

Max pulls me up and pulls my skirt slowly down my waist, his palms gliding over my hips. He hooks his fingers into the lace of my panties and draws them down my thighs with deliberate care, letting them fall to the floor. Then he settles back into the wide leather chair and guides me onto his lap.

I straddle him, knees sinking into the cool leather on either side of his hips.

He wraps one hand around my waist, the other stroking himself and guiding his cock to my entrance.

I sink down onto him inch by inch, savoring the thick stretch as he fills me completely.

A long, shared exhale escapes us both when he bottoms out.

For several heartbeats we stay perfectly still, foreheads pressed together, simply feeling. The heavy throb of him inside me, the way my body flutters and adjusts around his length, the delicious fullness that makes my breath shake. I can feel every pulse, every twitch of his cock deep inside me.

Then he begins to move.

Long, rolling thrusts that rock me against him, deep and unhurried.

I meet every stroke, rolling my hips in slow circles, taking him as deep as I can.

My arms are wrapped tight around his neck, my breasts pressed to his chest. The firelight flickers across our joined bodies, casting shifting gold over damp skin and straining muscle.

Every thrust drags a low moan from my throat. He feels so good, thick, hard, perfect. Hitting that sensitive spot inside me with every slow grind. Pleasure builds in heavy, shimmering waves, growing hotter and tighter with each deep stroke.

When I come, it crashes over me hard. I bury my face in his neck and cry out his name, clenching rhythmically around his cock as intense pulses of pleasure rip through me.

Max groans deeply, gripping my hips and driving up into me once, twice more before he follows, pressing himself as deep as possible and spilling inside me with a raw, broken guttural sound that vibrates against my throat.

We stay locked together, trembling, breathing hard, the fire crackling softly behind us, joined for a long time afterward..

Max’s arms are locked around my back, one hand gently stroking my spine. I rest my cheek against his damp shoulder, feeling the steady beat of his heart and the warmth of him still inside me. The aftershocks flutter softly through my body, gentle pulses around him as he softens inside me.

He brushes his lips against my temple. His voice is low and rough.

"Whatever happens tomorrow," he murmurs, "I have this. I have you."

I tighten around him gently and press a soft kiss to the side of his neck. "You have me. And you have Elena. No judge can take away what you chose."

He holds me closer, his hand sliding down to cup my hip, keeping us connected, our juices spilling. We remain like this, skin to skin, hearts slowing together, while the last of the fire quietly surrenders to the night and the Maine darkness wraps around Bellamare.

After. The fire is ember. His hand at my shoulder: two fingers, the same gesture, the same place it has always been.

None of it said. Hand over his. Bellamare is quiet. Tomorrow is tomorrow. Tonight we are here and the ground, whatever comes, is ours.
