Chapter 8

CHAPTER EIGHT

NATE

I stride into the VitaLabs lobby, my mind reeling from what Riley and I discovered. The receptionist barely glances up as I pass. Fine by me.

I spot Riley pacing near the elevators, her auburn hair escaping its tidy bun. She turns as I approach, green eyes flashing with excitement and apprehension.

"Nate, thank God. I was starting to think you'd bailed on me."

I smirk, pressing the elevator button. "And miss out on all this fun? Not a chance, Davis."

She rolls her eyes but can't hide a smile. The doors open, and we step inside, shoulders brushing in the confined space.

"I found something in Dr. Blackwell's files," she says urgently. "But I need your help to make sense of it."

"So you're asking for my help now?"

"Don't make me regret this, Russo. I'm trusting you."

The weight of her words hangs between us. Trust. It's not something I'm used to, but damn if it doesn't feel good.

The elevator dings and the doors open, but we stay put for a moment, suspended in a fragile bubble of understanding. Riley's eyes search mine, seeking reassurance.

As we step into the bustling hallway, I marvel at the turn my life has taken. Chasing down corruption with a fiery doctor who challenges me at every turn. It's not what I pictured, but somehow, it feels right. Like maybe I've finally found someone who sees past the billionaire playboy facade to the man beneath.

We reach my private office, the one place in VitaLabs I know is secure. As we enter, Riley visibly relaxes, eyes darting appreciatively over the state-of-the-art equipment.

"Impressed?" I tease.

"I have to admit, Russo, you don't do things by halves. This setup is... something else."

"Untraceable connections, unhackable firewalls, and enough processing power to make the NSA jealous. Whatever we uncover here stays here."

Riley's eyes sparkle with excitement. "Let's get to work."

I grin as she leans over the lab bench, her brow furrowed in concentration. "Finding what you need there, Davis?"

"I'd find it faster if you'd quit distracting me, Russo."

"Hey, just trying to be a supportive partner."

She snorts, a hint of a smile playing at her mouth. "Right. Because you're known for your selfless support."

"I'm wounded, Davis. Truly."

"Cry me a river, Nate."

We fall into a comfortable silence as she pores over the files. I watch her work, marveling at her fierce determination.

Jianyu clears his throat, drawing my attention. "Nate, I think I found something." He gestures to the complex data on his screen.

"Is that what I think it is?"

Jianyu nods, grim. "Proof the hospital has been covering up the surrogacy scandal."

Anger surges hot and bitter in my throat.

As we turn back to the evidence, a newfound sense of purpose settles over me. This is bigger than just me, bigger than VitaLabs.

As Jianyu leaves to retrieve something, the air in the lab feels thick, pressing down on me. I swallow hard, my mouth dry. This is it. The moment of truth.

"Riley, there's something I need to tell you."

She looks up, her green eyes searching mine. "What is it, Nate?"

"I’m part of the SilenceBreakers."

Silence stretches between us. I'm sure I've fucked everything up. But instead, her face softens with understanding.

"You've been helping them expose corruption." It’s not a question.

I nod, tension easing from my shoulders. "I've been using my resources to support the mission. To try and make a difference."

Riley steps closer, her hand on my arm. The touch is electric, sending sparks racing across my skin. "Nate, that's incredible. I had no idea."

I laugh, harsh in the quiet office. "Yeah, well, it's not exactly something I advertise. Billionaire playboy by day, vigilante hacker by night."

"Fuck the image. This is who you are, Nate. And it's pretty damn amazing."

Something cracks open inside me, warmth spreading through me. She accepts me. She sees me, all of me, and she doesn't flinch away.

Riley takes a deep breath. "Nate, there's something I need to tell you too."

"What is it, Davis?"

"I'm the whistleblower. The one who first reported the surrogacy scandal on the SilenceBreakers platform."

My jaw drops. "You're fucking kidding me."

Everything clicks into place. Her mentioning that she’d seen something troubling when we met at the bar, the way she’d already seemed a step ahead for this entire inquest. "Holy shit," I breathe. "We've been working together this whole time without even realizing it."

Riley laughs, slightly hysterical but genuine. "I can't believe it. And here I thought you were just some arrogant billionaire who didn't give a damn about anyone but himself."

"And I thought you were a stubborn, self-righteous pain in my ass."

"I mean, I am," she quips, mischievous glint in her eye. "But I'm also your partner in this fight."

I nod, feeling more certain than I have in years. "No more secrets, no more working in the shadows. From now on, we're a team."

"I like the sound of that," she says, a smile playing on her lips.

The walls we've built, the assumptions we've made—they're all crumbling away, leaving something new and exhilarating in their wake.

I run my fingers through my hair, my mind still reeling from the revelation I just shared with Riley. The weight of my secret feels lighter now that she knows.

"I knew you were more than just a pretty face, Russo, but this is huge," Riley says.

"You think I'm pretty, Davis?"

She rolls her eyes but smiles. "Focus, Nate. We still have a lot more to do."

"Right. Now that you know about my connection to the SilenceBreakers, we can use that to our advantage."

Riley nods. "We can leak the evidence we've gathered so far. Put pressure on the surrogacy team to come clean."

"And if they don't?"

"Then we keep digging. We don't stop until we bring those bastards to their knees."

I pull out my phone, scrolling through recent messages. Mateo Alvarez, an IT specialist, has been crucial in this investigation.

NATE

Hey Mateo. Any updates on those encrypted files?

His response comes quickly.

MATEO

Working on it, Nate. Should have something by tomorrow. This goes deep. Be careful.

Mateo's been taking huge risks to help us, and I'm grateful. With him on our side, we might actually succeed in bringing this to light.

The determination in Riley's voice sends a thrill down my spine. This woman, with her unwavering sense of justice and courage, is unlike anyone I've ever met. The fact that she's willing to fight this battle with me means more than I can put into words.

"Riley," I say softly, taking her hand. "I couldn't do this without you."

She looks up, eyes shining. "No matter what happens, I've got your back."

"And I've got yours."

The words hang between us, a promise and a vow.

"You know, when I was younger, I thought success was all about money and fame. But then I watched my grandmother die because of a preventable medical error. The system failed her, and I realized how broken it all was."

"Is that why you got into healthcare technology?"

"Yeah. But it wasn't enough. I thought I could change things from the inside, play by their rules. Then I uncovered my first case of corruption, saw how deep it went, how many lives were affected. That's when I knew I had to do more."

"The SilenceBreakers."

"Exactly. It became my mission to expose the truth, to fight for those who couldn't fight for themselves. Just like my grandmother." I pause, meeting Riley's gaze. "I've never told anyone that before."

She squeezes my hand. "Thank you for trusting me, Nate. It means more than you know."

The moment stretches between us, charged with tension. But before we can say more, Jianyu bursts into the lab, his face a mix of excitement and anxiety.

He thrusts a tablet into my hands. "Nate, the SilenceBreakers just dropped a massive data dump. You need to see this."

I scan the screen, a chill running down my spine. It's a comprehensive report, the culmination of months of work.

"Holy shit," I breathe. "We've outdone ourselves this time."

Riley looks at me, eyes widening. "Right, you're part of this. What exactly are we looking at, Nate?"

"This is what the SilenceBreakers do best. We've been gathering intel from whistleblowers across the city. This report connects all the dots."

Jianyu chimes in. "I've been monitoring secure channels. The encryption alone..."

"It's a web," I explain to Riley, shoulders touching as we study the screen. "Hospital administrators, corporate boardrooms, government officials. The corruption at Metropolitan General? Just the tip of the iceberg."

Riley's jaw sets, eyes flashing. "So it's not just a corrupt hospital. It's a whole conspiracy."

"Exactly. And now we have the evidence to prove it. Financial records, encrypted communications, data trails—it's all here."

"But how did you get all this?" Riley asks, a mix of awe and concern.

Jianyu grins. "Let's just say some of us have very particular sets of skills. Hacking, data analysis, financial forensics—when you bring together the best minds in tech and pair them with insider whistleblowers, not much stays hidden for long."

"This is what I've been working towards, Riley. What we've all been working towards. Using our skills, resources, and connections to expose the truth and make a difference."

Riley's hand finds mine, squeezing it tight. "Then let's use it. Every last bit of evidence. We take it all down."

I meet her gaze, seeing the same determination burning in my chest. "No more shadows, no more secrecy between us. You, me, Jianyu, the entire SilenceBreakers network—we're a team now."

As we dive deeper into the report, our fight has just become much bigger—and much more dangerous.

Riley leans in, her shoulder brushing against mine as she reads the message. "High-profile figures in the medical and political spheres... Nate, this is huge."

I nod, jaw clenched tight. "And dangerous. We're not just taking on a corrupt hospital anymore. We're going up against some of the most powerful people in the city."
