Chapter 14
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
NATE
I step out of my sleek sports car, taking a deep breath as I gaze at my childhood home. The familiar scent of Mom's homemade lasagna wafts through the air, and I can't help but smile. It's been too long since I've been back here.
As I approach the front door, it swings open, and there stand my parents, James and Laura Russo. Mom's face lights up with a warm smile, her eyes shining with love and concern. "Nate, my boy!" she exclaims, pulling me into a tight embrace.
Dad claps me on the back, his strong hand a comforting presence. "Welcome home, son," he says, his voice gruff with emotion.
I let myself melt into their embraces, feeling the weight of the world lift off my shoulders for a moment. It's like I'm a kid again, safe in the arms of my parents.
We make our way inside, settling into the cozy living room. The old family photos on the walls bring back a flood of memories, and I feel a lump form in my throat.
Mom sits beside me, her hand gently resting on my knee. "What's on your mind, sweetheart?" she asks, her eyes searching mine.
I take a deep breath, trying to find the right words. "It's just... everything with Riley and the investigation," I begin, my voice wavering slightly. "I'm in love with her, but I'm scared shitless that I won't be able to protect her from all this corruption and danger."
Dad leans forward, his brow furrowed with concern. "Son, you can't carry the weight of the world on your shoulders," he says firmly. "You and Riley are a team. You have to trust in each other."
I nod, swallowing hard. "I know, Dad. It's just... with my past mistakes, sometimes I wonder if I'm even worthy of her love."
Dad leans forward, his gaze intense and unwavering. "Son, listen to me," he says firmly. "Your past does not define you. What matters is the man you are now, the man who is fighting for what's right, the man who loves with his whole heart."
Mom's eyes soften, and she takes my hand in hers. "Nate, let me tell you something," she says, her voice gentle but firm. "When your father and I first started out, we faced our own set of challenges. There were times when I doubted myself, when I questioned whether I was strong enough to overcome the obstacles in our path."
I lean forward, hanging on her every word as she continues, "But you know what I learned? I learned that love is the most powerful force in the universe. When you have someone by your side who believes in you, who supports you unconditionally, there's nothing you can't overcome."
Her words hit me like a ton of bricks, and I feel the lump in my throat grow. "Nate, what you and Riley have is special," Mom says, her eyes shining with tears. "Don't let fear hold you back from embracing it fully. Trust in your bond, trust in each other, and you'll find the strength to weather any storm."
I nod, feeling a sense of clarity wash over me. "Thanks, Mom," I manage to choke out, my voice thick with emotion. "I needed to hear that."
As the conversation winds down, Dad stands up, stretching. "Come on, son. Let's get some fresh air."
We step out onto the patio, the cool evening breeze a welcome relief. Dad settles into his favorite chair, a cold beer in hand, and gestures for me to join him. I sink into the seat beside him, feeling the tension drain from my body.
"I'm proud of you, Nate," he says, his voice gruff. "The way you've stepped up to protect Riley, to fight for what's right... it takes a real man to do that."
I swallow hard, feeling a surge of emotion. "Thanks, Dad. I just... I love her so much. I can't imagine my life without her."
Dad nods, his eyes shining with understanding. "That's how I feel about your mother. When you find a love like that, you hold onto it with everything you've got. And you fight like hell to protect it."
We sit in comfortable silence for a moment, sipping our beers and watching the sun dip below the horizon. In this moment, I feel a sense of peace wash over me, a certainty that no matter what challenges lie ahead, I've got the love and support of my family to see me through.
As I'm about to head out, my phone buzzes in my pocket. Riley's name flashes across the screen, and my heart skips a beat. I answer, my voice low. "Hey, beautiful."
"Nate..." Her voice is soft, almost hesitant, and I can hear the longing in her tone. "Can you meet me? There's something I need to tell you, and I want to do it in person."
My mind races with possibilities, but I push them aside, focusing on the sound of her breathing. "Of course, Riley. Anything for you. Where do you want to meet?"
"The park. By the old oak tree. Can you be there in an hour?"
I swallow hard, my heart pounding in my chest. "I'll be there in 30 minutes."
As I pull up to the park, I see Riley pacing beneath the old oak tree, her body tense with nervous energy. When she spots me, she rushes over, her eyes wide with fear and urgency.
"Nate," she says, her voice trembling. "We have a problem. A big one."
I reach for her, but she shakes her head, glancing around nervously. "Not here. We can't be seen together."
My heart races. "Riley, what's going on?"
She takes a deep breath. "I overheard Dr. Blackwell on the phone. They're planning something big, Nate."
I feel the blood drain from my face. “What did you hear?"
"Enough to know we're in danger," she says, her voice barely above a whisper. "They mentioned 'taking care' of the problem. And then... and then they said your name."
The weight of her words hits me like a ton of bricks. "We need to go to the authorities, now."
Riley shakes her head frantically. "We can't. They've got people everywhere, Nate. We don't know who to trust."
I run a hand through my hair, my mind racing. "Okay, we need a plan. We need to?—”
"We need to separate," Riley interrupts, her eyes filled with pain.
I feel like I've been punched in the gut. "What? No, Riley, we're stronger together."
She reaches out, cupping my face in her hands. "Listen to me. If we stay together, we're an easy target. They'll use one of us to get to the other. We need to go underground, gather more evidence separately."
I want to argue, to tell her we can face this together, but deep down, I know she's right. The stakes are too high.
"How long?" I ask.
"As long as it takes," she says, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "Until we have enough to bring them down for good."
I pull her close, breathing in her scent, trying to memorize every detail of this moment. "I love you, Riley. No matter what happens, remember that."
She clings to me tightly. "I love you too, Nate. Stay safe. And when this is all over..."
"We'll find each other," I finish for her.
With one last, lingering kiss, we part ways. I watch her walk away, every step feeling like a knife to my heart. But I know this isn't the end. It's just a pause, a necessary sacrifice to ensure our future.
As I drive away from Riley, the weight of our separation crushes me. The thought of losing her, of facing this fight alone, is almost unbearable. Have I made a terrible mistake? The darkness of the night mirrors the emptiness in my heart, and for the first time, I wonder if our love truly can conquer all.
I pull over to the side of the road, unable to focus on driving as emotions overwhelm me. Gripping the steering wheel, I let out a shaky breath.
"What am I doing?" I say out loud, my voice cracking. "I'm letting her go. I'm letting the best thing that's ever happened to me walk away."
The fear that's been simmering beneath the surface finally boils over. "I can't lose her," I whisper, feeling tears sting my eyes. But what if by holding on, I put her in more danger? What if my love for her is what ultimately destroys her?
I slam my hand against the dashboard, frustration and fear battling inside me. "No," I say firmly, making a decision. "I have to protect her, even if it means protecting her from me. From us."
Taking a deep breath, I voice the painful truth I've been avoiding. "I need to step back. I need to distance myself emotionally. It's the only way to keep her safe, to keep my head clear enough to end this nightmare."
The words taste bitter in my mouth, but I force myself to say them, to make them real. "I can't be with Riley. Not now. Maybe not ever. Love is a liability we can't afford in this fight."
As I start the car again, I feel a piece of my heart shatter. But even as I try to convince myself that retreating from love is the right thing to do, I know it's futile. The thought of a life without Riley is unbearable.
I take a deep breath, my hands steadying on the wheel. "No," I say firmly, this time with renewed determination. "Pushing her away isn't the answer. It's what they want – to divide us, to weaken us."
My brows furrow, a plan forming in my mind. "I'll keep my distance for now, but only to protect her. I'll work twice as hard, dig twice as deep. I'll end this quickly and safely, not by retreating, but by fighting harder than ever."
Hope washes over me, replacing the despair from moments ago. "A life without Riley isn't a life I'm willing to live. And I'll do whatever it takes to make sure we have a future together."
