62. Metis

Metis

was a law unto her own.

She was a study in quickness.

As she grew from child to girlhood,

she also grew a hunger for knowledge.

There was something else

I discovered in those early years

of Metis’s life. Things I wish

I had not ignored.

Once, I thought I saw sparks

escape the ends of her fingertips

to light the fire we had built

on a colder day out at the sea together.

A fleeting thought had passed then,

that Metis was also strange,

different as Asteria and I

had always been.

And as Asteria and I learned

more about our secret abilities,

our capacities to create,

more than once,

I felt the warm glow of her

amber eyes, watching us make magic

when we thought she was not there

from inside the cave, inside the dark.

Even in that era, when I realized

Metis was an unstoppable force,

what would happen if she learned

the truth of who she really was.
