69. Pallas
Pallas
My sisters often spoke
about Gods and men
in ways of the flesh.
For years, I had ignored
this as unimportant.
But now, I felt strange.
It was like a pull
within me, drawing me
closer toward him.
His dark-bright eyes
never left my face
as he waited for my voice.
I finally found it
and said quietly,
‘Yes. I am Styx.’
I searched for more words
but they eluded me
in his presence.
What was wrong with me?
I was usually so
sharp-tongued.
He moved closer.
‘You helped Oceanus
build many of his rivers.’
I was surprised by this.
‘Did he tell you that?’
Pallas shook his head.
‘Your brothers did,
mostly out of resentment.’
I narrowed my eyes slightly.
‘I am surprised they told you.’
He shook his head.
‘They wouldn’t have,
but I was admiring your work
on the great map in
Oceanus’s chambers.’
I had to look away at this,
a warmth colouring my face.
When I turned back,
I saw three of my sisters
had appeared at his side.
With their long limbs
and silky dark hair,
they smiled and demurred
to get his attention,
which he readily gave.
They pulled at his hands
leading him away.
I had seen this happen
countless times,
and yet this time,
I felt it like the sting
of fresh salt
on an open wound.
But he turned back
as he was led away,
and offered me a smile.
I did not return it.
