112. They Kept It in Memory

They Kept It in Memory

The others were Gods

and Goddesses and

they had the ability to burn

this light and air map

into their memory.

But because I was a nymph,

my heart moved to smaller things.

I told Asteria, ‘Before we leave to look

for Metis, we must take care

of all that we have loved and made.’

Asteria understood quickly.

We turned to our consorts.

‘Give us till the morning.

We have some tasks we must do,’

I told Pallas and Perses.

They looked as though they had

a thousand questions. They looked

as though they wanted answers.

But perhaps the determination on our faces

told them that we would never say.

We would always choose each other first.

And so, hand in hand, Asteria and I

left the palace of Coeus

to finish tending to everything

we had made, our secret gifts.
