122. Tartarus Laughed
Tartarus Laughed
and nodded happily.
He turned to the others.
‘We are a hubristic race.
We believe ourselves immortal,
but we rely on being evoked.
Only a nymph amongst Gods
can answer this question honestly.’
He looked to me,
now filled with gentleness.
‘What is it you want, little one?’
I swallowed hard.
‘Metis, the other Titan Goddess
who visited you. Where did she go?’
Tartarus narrowed his eyes slightly,
as though digging through memory.
‘She was looking for a lava stone.
She too answered a riddle for it.
Then asked me where the garden
of the golden apples lay.’
I frowned at his words.
The garden of the golden apples?
It was Pallas who took my arm then.
‘He is speaking of the king of orchards, Atlas.’
I looked at the great being and whispered,
‘Thank you.’
