If I Had Known
that it was one of the last times
I would ever see her,
I would have held her longer.
I would have tried to persuade her.
I would have hidden her in our palace.
I would have hidden Hekate here too.
But back then,
I felt betrayed.
I felt unending grief.
I was furious she had chosen
to side with the losing Titans,
just as she was sorrowful
I had changed allegiance to the Olympians.
A family split in two is still a family.
We had just lost sight of it all.
So much ichor had fallen now.
So much blood had been shed.
When the news came
that the Titans who still fought Zeus
were being captured,
their weapons falling useless
against his thunderbolts,
that Titan lands were no match
for Poseidon’s floods and hurricanes,
that Hera’s birds knew too many
Titan secrets for the older Gods to win,
I knew that I chose right
for my children.
Still, my heart broke
for Asteria and Hekate.
