Chapter Fourteen #2

Harold stroked him slowly. Not teasing, not drawing it out.

Steady, firm, his thumb working the head on every upstroke, watching Jack's face because that was the first time anyone had touched Jack for the purpose of making him feel good and Harold needed to see it.

Needed to be in the room when it happened, the way he'd told Jack he wanted Jack to be in the room.

Jack was in the room. His eyes were half-closed but not blank.

His body was tight, trembling. Reaching for it.

His hips worked into Harold's hand. Rough, honest moans and groans rolled out of him.

Harold's cock ached in his own jeans but this wasn't about him.

This was about the man in the passenger seat who was discovering that someone could touch him without taking something.

Jack came with Harold's name in his mouth. His body bowed, his hand clamped on Harold's wrist. The orgasm hit him so hard he stopped breathing for a second. Harold worked him through it, gentler, slowing as Jack's body shuddered and went heavy against the seat.

The air around them was quiet. The truck engine idling. Jack's breathing returned to normal. Harold's hand… wet and resting on Jack's thigh.

Then Jack reached for Harold's belt.

His hands were steady. Efficient. The same focused precision he brought to every task. He had Harold's buckle open in two seconds and was reaching for the zipper when Harold caught his wrist.

The touch had changed. Not the hands themselves, not the motion.

But the quality of it. A minute ago Jack had been reaching for Harold's shoulders with a grip that said I want you here.

Then he was reaching for Harold's belt with hands that said I owe you this.

The shift was subtle and someone who wasn't Harold might have missed it.

But Harold's Dom brain had been reading body language for twenty years and his cop brain had been reading Jack for weeks and what he was seeing was a man transitioning from desire to service, from wanting to paying.

"Stop," Harold said. The word came out of him like pulling a hook from his own mouth.

His body was screaming at him. Every nerve ending, every inch of skin that Jack's hands had touched, every pulse of blood in his cock that was so hard it hurt, all of it revolting against the word he'd just said.

Jack's hand was on his zipper and Harold wanted it there.

He wanted Jack's hand inside his jeans and around his cock.

He wanted to feel Jack touch him the way Harold had just touched him, with intention and heat and real desire.

He wanted it so badly his vision blurred.

But the hands on his zipper weren't the same hands that had gripped his shoulders.

Jack froze. His face, which had been open and wrecked and beautiful thirty seconds ago, was smoothing out.

The mask sliding back into place. The service mode engaging.

Harold recognized it the way he'd recognized every one of Jack's patterns, because what those hands were doing wasn't wanting. It was paying.

Harold moved Jack's hand gently to the console between them. He held it there for a moment, his thumb against Jack's knuckles. His own hand was still trembling from the effort of not pulling Jack's fingers back to where they'd been.

"You don't owe me anything for that," Harold said.

"You're hard."

"I am. That's my problem, not your job."

Jack stared at him. The mask was halfway on and halfway off and Harold could see the confusion underneath it, the gears trying to process a situation that didn't fit any template Jack had.

Someone had gotten him off. The debt was open.

That was how it worked. That was the only way it had ever worked.

"I don't understand you," Jack said.

"I know." Harold zipped himself up. Buckled his belt. His cock was protesting but his cock didn't get a vote. "When you reach for me because you want me, not because you think you owe me, that's when."

"When what?"

"When I let you touch me."

Jack was quiet. He fixed his own jeans, buckled his belt.

Harold wiped his hand on a couple of old napkins from the glove box.

The cab of the truck smelled like sex, ocean water, and Harold's loam-and-earth scent, all of it mixed together in a way that Harold's nose would remember for the rest of his life.

"People only want three things from sharks," Jack said. "Money, violence, or sex. Those are the currencies. You won't take sex. What do you want?"

Harold looked at him. Streetlight from the next block over caught the edge of Jack's jaw, the line of his throat, the mouth that Harold had been kissing a few minutes ago. "I want you to have a second chance."

"At what?"

"Everything. The whole thing. Being alive without someone else's rules telling you how.

Having a bed you feel safe in. Touching someone because it feels good and not because you lost a fight.

" Harold's voice was steady but his hands were not.

He kept them on the wheel where Jack couldn't see them shake.

"I want you to find out what you're like when no one's hurting you. I think you'd be surprised."

Jack turned away and looked out the passenger window. The side street was empty. A oneform cat crossed the pavement under the broken lamp, unhurried, tail high.

"Take me home," Jack said.

Harold put the truck in gear. He drove Jack to the residential block where the shiver houses sat and pulled over at the corner because Jack wouldn't let him get closer. Jack opened the door, then stopped with one foot on the pavement.

"The sushi was good," he said. Without looking back.

He got out and walked toward the house. Harold watched him go, the lean silhouette moving down the sidewalk under the streetlights.
