Chapter 34
Dex
The day before the wedding, I find myself once again at Liam’s, helping with chairs, tables, and more. At least we don’t have to set up everything until tomorrow. Just dropping off today.
I’m taking a break in the kitchen, helping myself to some water, when Layla corners me.
“Hey,” she says, eyeing me with a strange expression.
“Hey…”
“So, I saw you two last night.” Right to the point, I guess.
I shrug. “I figured.”
“Well, obviously, it would be our dream if our two best friends got together. But I kind of thought that ship sailed…”
“Same.”
“Okay, well…just be careful. She’s my best friend and she’s not always as tough as she makes herself seem.”
“Very well aware.” I nod. “You know I have no ill intentions. I’m the giant emotional teddy bear who always gets his heart broken, remember?”
“Yeah, well…I don’t want to see you get burned again either.
” I definitely waited up for a while last night, hoping she’d come find me.
But I didn’t want to be presumptuous and show up at her door, either.
I know she’s only starting to work on being less guarded, and I don’t want to scare her away so soon.
Besides, I want more from her than just another drunken hookup.
“I appreciate that. But I’ll be okay. And I’m sure you’ll be the first one to hear all the updates.”
She frowns. “No…you know she didn’t even tell me about you two until, like, six months later, right?”
My mouth hangs open slightly. “I didn’t know that.” Part of me is surprised, part of me isn’t.
“Yep. Sometimes I think…she’s keeping in a lot more,” she remarks. Then she shrugs and her expression lightens. “She’s always been that way, though. She’ll talk when she’s ready.
I give her a hopeful smile and nod. “How are you feeling? ”
“Excited.”Her smile lights up her face. It’s genuine.
“Good. It’s going to turn out great,” I reassure her, though there’s no hesitation in her demeanor.
“I know. Liam will be there waiting for me,” she smiles wide.
“You guys are so damn corny.”
“We are.”
“Okay. As long as you know.” I take one last swig of water and salute her before heading back outside.
