Chapter Three #3
I stared, shock making my tongue slow. This wasn’t going like any of my other experiences at all. I nearly bailed on the dream, but again, I wasn’t ready to give up yet. I needed to prove to my family that I could do this.
“I’m here for you.”
Her head cocked, strands of her hair falling as she ran a hand over her face. “For me? I must’ve overdosed on coffee yesterday because you sure as hell don’t look like my media law homework, and that’s what I need to be doing right now.”
I looked down at myself, surprised to see my usual black pant, soft shirt combination in place. And, then, my jaw loosened when I noticed that my skin had remained the ruby red tone that it always was. And my nails, still black and sharp. I was…. still me.
She was dreaming of me as I was. It was incredibly odd. It also made me feel instantly vulnerable. Uninterested in my observation of myself, she’d turned to her desk, muttering. “Can’t believe I’m dreaming about homework. I have to get out of this place.”
The power continued to trickle in, but I felt like I needed to leave. I rallied against it, pushing to find those instincts I knew ran through my form.
“Perhaps I can take your mind off of that?”
She stilled, then slowly turned back. “You’re still here. Huh. How odd. Usually, when I try to wake myself up in my dreams, it works. This is kind of…”
I raised my brows. And, to my surprise she blushed, her pretty face flushing. “Weird, I guess.” She cocked her head at me. “I guess we could take advantage of this.”
The power strummed between us and distantly I was aware that arousal ghosted across my skin.
Mine, not hers. My heart hammered in my ears.
That hadn’t happened before. Not that incubi ever skirted away from arousal, it was practically our way of life.
But, this feeling was deep, dark, growing in my gut as the woman stood and moved towards me.
“I need your help.”
I licked my lips, watching the play of her long legs as she moved across the shadows of the room. “I aim to please.”
She stood before me now, so close I could smell her. And I’d been wrong earlier. The scent in this room, it was her. Every instinct in my body screamed at me to press my face into the soft pulse at her throat, to taste and smell and cover that sweet scent with myself.
My teeth cracked as I forced myself away from that subject.
“You do?” She asked, her eyes were wide against mine. “That’s probably a good thing then. Because, I need your help.”
I soft growl left my throat before I could bite it back. Her soft intake of breath made my cock swell and I swallowed hard before I answered. “Your dream, your fantasy.”
Her lips curled in a soft smile. “Well, then I guess it’s your turn to read these to me.
” She shoved a folder against my chest before turning and climbing onto her unmade bed.
Settling there, she eyed me with eagerness.
“Go on, there’s no way my subconscious sent tall, dark and demon-y to me and then made him incapable of reading my handwriting?
I know it’s really bad but this is what I need.
This test is going to be the end of me.”
I looked down at the notes, both the bolded typed text and small little arrows and sloppy handwriting in the margins. This was what she wanted me to do? I looked up at her, still confused.
“You want me to read this? That’s all.” I held the paper between us.
“I’ve heard that some people listen to their lectures in their sleep. Maybe this is my brain's solution.”
“Oh.” I cleared my throat. then moved stiffly over to sit at the chair she’d been in before. It creaked when I sat down on it. “Where should I start?”
“Hmm, probably defamation. It’s an oral exam, so I just need to be able to answer back to you–or Jesus–really to myself.” She laughed, the sound sliding over my mind like a caress, “This is trippy. But, at this point, I’ll take whatever I can get.”
The power thrummed again, still consistent between us.
It made me giddy. No matter how odd this might be, this was working.
This engagement between us, even not sexual, was powerful enough all on its own.
And while I wanted to slink away, to hoard the knowledge and my newly cultivated power, I didn’t.
She had a test she needed to work on. And every second that I stayed made something deep in my soul purr in enjoyment.
My eyes found the section on defamation and I started reading.
Present day
"You know what," I stood, straightening my pant legs as I did. "Do it."
Traum poked his head back around the corner he'd passed. "What?"
"Put me to work."
His brow lowered, "Here at the ETA?"
"Anywhere."
"I take it you're finally going to tell me what's going on. Why are you here, in a town that you had no interest in until a few weeks ago?"
I nodded slowly. "I can." Hades, my throat was so fucking dry. "I need to stay here longer."
"Did Arafel..."
"No," I braced myself, "I'm here for her."
My older brother blinked, obviously trying to catch up.
"My mate. She's here in Salus Glen."
