Chapter Thirty-Five

A totally normal wedding!

Elodie

Elevators are the most romantic place to exist, and I decide immediately after Will says his—completely ridiculous, completely over the top, completely swoon-worthy —vows that when I follow the soulmate bond to love, I will be marrying Roman in one. This one, if Liam allows.

“I’m not getting married in this elevator,” Roman whispers to me, voice wet as we watch his sister marry his best friend from halfway outside the elevator, because when we tried to climb in after them, it was deemed ‘too crowded,' so we were given keep-the-door-open duty instead.

I shush him. We can compromise later. I’m not attached to this elevator, per se.

“Or any elevator,” he follows up.

I glare at him. “I’m trying to watch a joyous, momentous occasion,” I hiss. “Shut up.”

“Both of you shut up,” Ruby snaps. “We’re trying to have a wedding here.”

“I think they should get married in the elevator too,” Will says. “New family tradition!”

“Children,” Rhonda, Roman and Ruby’s mother, interjects. “The wedding, please.”

“Don’t worry, darling,” Roger, their father, consoles. “It seems we’ll be getting another wedding very soon.”

I throw a smile behind me and give them a thumbs up.

“Soon?” Ruby asks, turning her back on Sol, who agreed last minute to officiate the wedding when Limoncella, Amber’s sister, came down with the flu. Apparently, Limoncella is ordained. Sol is not ordained, but considering Ruby and Will are already legally married, I didn’t think it mattered much.

“Soon,” Roman confirms.

Ruby scowls at him, then at me. “Last time we talked, you told me he loves you and wants to kiss you, but that you did not love him back and you hadn’t kissed yet. What’s this about ‘soon’?”

“We’ve kissed now,” I explain. “Soulmates for sure. Love will come.”

“Soon on that, also,” Roman says, full of confidence. I’d call it unfounded, but… well, we are soulmates.

“When did that happen?” Ruby asks.

“Yeah, I didn’t get an update on this either,” Will pouts.

Sol’s brows furrow. “You guys aren’t having a quick wedding, are you? I don’t have any more vacation days this year.”

“I’ll be getting married June 14,” I assure him. “On the most romantic day of the year.”

He nods, relieved.

“A summer wedding,” Rhonda mutters. “That will be nice. I can wear one of my hats.”

“Not the Mr. Qi one,” Roman orders. “The wedding colors will be pink and yellow. No blue. No Mr. Qi.”

“I wasn’t going to wear the Mr. Qi hat,” Rhonda grouses, not even a little bit believably. Roger pats her knee.

“You’re not going to be stupid and mess this up, are you?” Ruby asks, leveling her cane at Roman. “Because if you mess this up, I’ll kill you. Then, I’ll bring you back to life, because you’re my brother and I can’t live without you. But before that? I’ll kill you. Do you understand?”

His whole face softens as her words penetrate, and she unknowingly confirms what I told him last night—that he’ll always be her brother. “I’m not going to mess it up. We’re soulmates.”

Will blinks, jaw dropped. “You believe in soulmates?” he asks. “You? Roman Vann? Soulmates believer?”

“Yes,” Roman confirms.

“Wow,” Will whispers. “He really is in love.”

“Good,” Ruby snips. “Now that we’re all on the same page.” She spins around, huffing. “Let’s finish this.”

“That was awesome,” Brian whispers to Frank where they’re lined up outside of Will’s side of the elevator. “Soap opera-level awesome.”

Frank elbows him.

“From the top!” Will declares.

Sol clears his throat.

“Dearly beloved…”
