CHAPTER THREE #5
Amanda couldn't bear to look at it. She buried her face into her pillow.
Closing her eyes. Trying desperately not to remember... Trying desperately not to forgive...
Trying desperately not to answer the phone that she secretly wished would ring one more time.
Later That Evening...
Downtown Chicago shimmered beneath thousands of city lights.
Cars rolled steadily through busy intersections while restaurants buzzed with conversation and laughter.
John stood patiently outside a small Italian restaurant, nervously checking his watch for what had to be the tenth time.
He adjusted the sleeves of his button-down shirt.
Smoothed his hair. Then checked the street again.
Relax.
It's just one date.
He laughed quietly to himself.
Easy for you to say.
A familiar voice interrupted his thoughts.
"John?"
He turned around. And completely forgot how to speak. Melissa stood a few feet away. A simple blush-colored dress swayed gently in the evening breeze. Her hair had been curled softly, falling over one shoulder. She smiled uncertainly.
"...What?"
John blinked.
"...Wow."
Melissa laughed nervously.
"What?"
He shook his head.
"Nothing." He smiled.
"I'm just..."
He searched for the right words.
"...really glad you came."
Melissa felt warmth spread across her cheeks.
"So am I."
Dinner passed far more easily than either of them expected.
There were no awkward silences. No uncomfortable pauses.
Just conversation. They talked about school.
Their favorite teachers. Movies. Childhood stories.
John confessed he'd once fallen into Lake Michigan trying to impress his cousins.
Melissa laughed so hard she nearly dropped her fork.
"You are never living that down."
"I wasn't planning on it."
For the first time in weeks... Melissa laughed without forcing herself to. John noticed. He smiled quietly to himself. Eventually... The conversation slowed. John gently set his glass back onto the table.
"Can I ask you something?"
Melissa nodded.
"Of course."
"How's your dad?"
The smile slowly disappeared from her face. She looked down at her plate. For a long moment... She simply stared at it. John immediately regretted asking.
"You don't have to answer if—" "No."
Melissa interrupted gently.
"It's okay."
She took a slow breath. Then... For the first time...
She told someone everything. Not just about the overdue bills.
Not just about the eviction notices. Not just about the hospital visits.
Everything. She told him about watching her mother quietly cry at the kitchen table.
About pretending everything was fine at school.
About feeling guilty every time she smiled.
About Amanda. About losing the person who had always been her safe place.
John never interrupted. He simply listened.
By the time she finished... Melissa's eyes were filled with tears.
"I don't even know who I am anymore."
Silence settled gently over the table. John slowly reached across it. His fingers found hers. He gave her hand the smallest squeeze.
"Melissa..."
She looked up. His eyes were full of compassion.
"I can't fix all of this."
She swallowed.
"I wish I could."
His thumb brushed softly across the back of her hand.
"But..."
He smiled.
"...you don't have to face it alone anymore." Melissa felt something inside her finally break. Not from sadness. From relief. Tears rolled freely down her cheeks. She laughed weakly through them.
"...Why?"
John looked at her.
"Why what?"
"Why are you being so nice to me?"
His answer came without hesitation.
"Because..."
He smiled softly.
"...you're worth being nice to."
Melissa's breath caught. No one had ever said those words to her before. She searched his face, looking for pity. For obligation. For anything that suggested he didn't mean it. She found none. Only sincerity. Without thinking... She stood.
Walked around the table. And gently cupped his face.
John looked at her in surprise. Melissa smiled through her tears.
Then... She kissed him. Softly. Carefully.
Like she was afraid the moment might disappear if she moved too quickly.
John kissed her back. When they finally pulled apart...
Neither of them spoke. They simply smiled.
John rubbed the back of his neck. Laughing nervously.
"So..."
Melissa tilted her head.
"So?"
"I actually..." He reached into the inside pocket of his jacket. Melissa's eyebrows lifted. He pulled out two envelopes. She blinked.
"...What are those?"
John slid one across the table.
"Open it."
Melissa carefully opened the envelope. A beautifully designed ticket slid into her hand. She looked up. John smiled.
"Will you go to prom with me?"
Melissa laughed. The tears were still there. But this time... They came with a smile. She looked back down at the ticket. Then at him.
"I'd love to."
John smiled so brightly it was impossible not to smile back. Outside... The city continued moving around them. Cars passed. Streetlights glowed. Somewhere nearby, a musician played softly on a street corner.
Inside the little restaurant... Two teenagers smiled across a table. Completely unaware that the choices they were making... Would one day change far more lives than either of them could possibly imagine.
