CHAPTER SIX
“The End… Or is it?”
The steady rhythm of a heart monitor echoed through the room.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Morning sunlight filtered through the partially opened blinds, casting pale streaks across the hospital floor.
The smell of antiseptic lingered in the air.
John groaned softly. Everything hurt. His head pounded.
His ribs ached with every breath. Even opening his eyes felt impossible. Slowly... His eyelids fluttered open.
The ceiling above him blurred in and out of focus. White. Bright. Unfamiliar. He blinked several times, trying to clear his vision. A nurse standing near the doorway immediately noticed. Her eyes widened.
"Doctor."
She stepped into the hallway.
"He's awake."
Within seconds, a physician entered the room. He offered John a reassuring smile before shining a small penlight into each of his eyes.
"Good morning."
John squinted. The light felt blinding.
"Can you tell me your name?"
John swallowed. His throat felt painfully dry.
"...John."
He took another shaky breath.
"Johnathan Prescott."
The doctor nodded.
"Very good."
He clicked the light off
.
"And do you know where you are?"
John slowly turned his head. The hospital bed. The IV in his arm. The machines beside him.
"...Hospital."
The single word unlocked everything. Rain. Melissa crying. The truck. Headlights. The scream of tires. Metal twisting. Glass exploding. His eyes flew open.
"...Melissa."
His voice cracked immediately. He tried sitting up too fast. Pain shot through his chest.
"Where's Melissa?"
The doctor instinctively steadied him.
"Easy."
John ignored him.
"Where is she?"
The doctor exchanged a brief glance with the nurse. Then looked back at John.
"She's alive."
John closed his eyes. A shaky breath escaped him. Thank God. Tears filled his eyes almost instantly.
"Can I see her?"
The doctor's expression softened.
"Not yet."
John looked back at him.
"She's still unconscious."
Relief mixed painfully with fear. Alive. She was alive. That was enough. For now. John slowly nodded and leaned back against the pillow. The doctor gave his shoulder a reassuring pat before quietly leaving the room with the nurse. The room fell silent once again. A few moments later...
A quiet knock came from the doorway. John looked up.
Melissa's mother stood there. She looked as though she'd aged years overnight.
Dark circles rested beneath swollen eyes.
Her clothes were wrinkled. Her hair had been hastily pulled back.
She looked exhausted. Completely drained. John managed the smallest smile.
"...Mrs. West."
She returned it, though it barely reached her eyes. She stepped inside. Closing the door gently behind her. John searched her face.
"...Is Melissa okay?"
Mrs. West nodded.
"She's alive."
John let out another unsteady breath. His shoulders relaxed. "...Thank God."
She walked over and sat quietly beside his bed.
For a moment... Neither of them spoke. John noticed something immediately. She wasn't looking at him. She kept twisting her wedding ring around her finger. Over and over again.
His stomach tightened.
"...What happened?"
Mrs. West looked down. Her hands trembled.
"The accident..."
She struggled to continue.
"...was worse than we thought."
John slowly pushed himself upright despite the sharp pain in his side.
"What do you mean?"
She closed her eyes briefly. Searching for words no parent should ever have to say.
"When the truck hit the tree..."
Her voice broke.
"...a large branch came through the passenger side."
John felt the blood drain from his face.
"...No."
She nodded once. Tears spilled freely down her cheeks.
"It..." She covered her mouth for a moment.
"...It caused catastrophic injuries."
John couldn't breathe. His hands gripped the hospital blanket.
"The trauma surgeons worked for hours."
"They did everything they could."
"They saved her life."
He whispered the question he was almost too afraid to ask.
"...Is she..."
His voice disappeared.
"...going to be okay?"
Mrs. West nodded.
"She'll recover."
A pause.
"Physically."
John noticed it immediately. The hesitation. His stomach twisted.
"...But?"
Mrs. West looked toward the window.
Unable to meet his eyes.
"The damage..."
She swallowed. "...was too severe."
Silence.
"They weren't able to save her uterus."
The room became completely still. Even the heart monitor seemed impossibly loud.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
John stared at her. Unable to process the words.
"...No."
It came out almost soundlessly. Mrs. West began crying again.
"The doctors said..."
She wiped at her face.
"...she won't be able to carry children."
John covered his mouth with both hands. His entire body trembled. He looked down at his own bruised hands. The same hands that had been gripping the steering wheel. The same hands that had turned it too late. In his mind... There was only one thought.
I did this.
His vision blurred with tears.
"...Does..."
He struggled to speak
"...Does Melissa know?"
Mrs. West slowly shook her head. "No."
John closed his eyes. A tear slipped down his cheek.
"...Please."
His voice cracked.
"...Don't tell her today."
She looked at him.
Surprised.
"John..."
He shook his head.
"Please."
His breathing became uneven.
"Not today."
He stared at the ceiling. Barely holding himself together.
"She lost her dad."
Another tear rolled down his face.
"She almost lost her life."
He swallowed hard.
"If she wakes up..."
His voice broke completely.
"...and hears everything today..." He looked back at Mrs. West.
"...it's going to crush her."
Mrs. West quietly cried.
"I know."
She wiped at her eyes.
"But she deserves the truth."
John nodded immediately.
"I know she does."
There wasn't a second of hesitation.
"I would never keep it from her."
He took a long, shaky breath.
"But let her wake up first."
His eyes drifted toward the doorway.
"Let her grieve her dad."
"Let her remember she's alive."
He looked back at Melissa's mother.
"When she's strong enough..."
His voice softened.
"...I'll be there."
"I'll tell her."
"No matter how much she hates me afterward." Mrs. West studied him for a long moment. She saw a frightened eighteen-year-old. Bruised. Broken. Drowning in guilt. Not making excuses. Not asking for forgiveness. Only thinking about Melissa.
Finally... She gave the smallest nod.
"...Okay."
Silence settled over the room again. John stared blankly at the ceiling. The tears continued falling. He barely noticed them anymore. His lips moved almost imperceptibly.
"I'm so sorry..."
The words weren't directed at anyone in particular. Melissa. Her mother. Her father. Maybe even himself. A sudden knock interrupted the silence. A nurse stepped inside.
"Mrs. West?"
She immediately stood. The nurse smiled gently.
"Melissa's waking up."
Mrs. West's hand flew to her mouth. Fresh tears filled her eyes. She turned toward John. Unsure what to do. John forced a smile despite everything.
"...Go."
His voice was weak.
"She needs her mom."
Mrs. West nodded.
"...Thank you."
She hurried from the room. The door quietly clicked shut behind her.
John remained alone. The smile disappeared.
He stared at the closed door. Listening to the fading footsteps in the hallway.
Then... For the first time since waking up...
He let himself cry. Not because he was afraid.
Not because he was hurt. But because the future he had imagined for Melissa... Had changed forever.
Outside his room, the hospital came alive with another busy morning. Inside... John sat alone with a grief he knew he would carry for the rest of his life. The steady rhythm of the heart monitor echoed softly through the room.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Morning sunlight filtered through the hospital blinds, casting thin golden lines across the crisp white sheets. For several long moments... Nothing happened. Then... Melissa's fingers twitched. Barely. Almost imperceptibly.
A nurse charting medications near the doorway looked up. She watched carefully. Another small movement. Melissa's eyelids fluttered. Once. Twice. Slowly... Her eyes opened.
Everything around her swam together in a blur of bright lights and unfamiliar shapes. She blinked repeatedly, trying to bring the room into focus. Her head pounded. Her body felt impossibly heavy. Even breathing hurt.
"...Hello?"
Her voice was little more than a whisper. The nurse immediately set down her clipboard.
"Doctor!"
She hurried into the hallway.
"She's awake!"
Melissa's heart began beating faster. She looked around the room. White ceiling. Hospital equipment. IV tubing. Machines she didn't recognize. None of it made sense.
"...Where..."
She swallowed against the dryness in her throat.
"...Where am I?"
Footsteps rushed toward her room. The door burst open. A woman hurried inside.
Her eyes were red from crying. The moment she saw Melissa awake... Relief flooded her face.
"...Melissa!"
She rushed to the bedside and immediately reached for Melissa's hand. Melissa stared at her. Confused. The woman smiled through fresh tears.
"Oh, thank God."
Melissa searched her face desperately. Trying. Wanting. Needing to recognize her. Nothing.
"...Who..."
Her voice trembled.
"...Who are you?"
The woman's smile disappeared instantly. Her face crumpled.
"...Honey."
She squeezed Melissa's hand gently.
"It's me."
Melissa slowly pulled her hand back. "I..."
She shook her head.
"I'm sorry..."
Tears began gathering in her eyes.
"...I don't know you."
The words shattered the woman. A doctor quietly stepped beside the bed.
His voice remained calm. Gentle.
"Melissa."
She turned toward him.
"You've experienced some memory loss."
He spoke carefully.
"That's common after a traumatic brain injury."
Melissa stared at him.
"...Memory loss?"
He nodded.
"I'd like to ask you a few questions."
She nodded weakly.
"Can you tell me your full name?"
Melissa opened her mouth.
"...Melissa." She frowned. The rest refused to come. She tried again.
"...Melissa..."
Silence. Nothing. Her breathing became uneven.
"I..."
She looked helplessly between the doctor and the woman beside her.
"...I can't remember."
Tears spilled down her cheeks. "I can't remember my own name."
The doctor offered a reassuring smile.
