Chapter Twenty Two
Chiara
E verything is quieter now, it’s the kind of silence that only comes after a storm.
It’s strange to think about how it’s all settled so quickly; how everything has fallen into place, even when it feels like nothing could ever be as it was.
I’ve become familiarised with their touch, their voices so soothing and comforting. The way they both look at me, and the way they both protect me too.
Stepping into our room, I can’t help but smile as I look around it, appreciating the small touches they’ve added because they know I’ll love it.
Things like the light curtains that sway slightly whenever the soft breeze comes through, or the stack of books on my nightstand, the ones I haven’t had a chance to read yet.
Things still feel new, but somehow, it feels like it’s always been this way; like this life we’ve built together is the only one that was meant to have happened.
I sit on the edge of our bed, patiently waiting for Nikolai and Mikhail to join me.
Only a few minutes later, and the door opens quietly.
I feel the weight of their presence before they even step into the room.
Nikolai is always quieter, always careful, and Mikhail is like a force of nature.
But as they both move towards me, it’s with the same sense of purpose.
I see it in their eyes.
They are here, and they are mine.
Just as I am theirs.
It fills my heart with joy.
Mikhail reaches me first, his hands warm as he tilts my jaw up, meeting my gaze.
“What’s wrong, beauty?”
He asks, and I hear the clear softness in his voice, the care that always lingers there.
I open my mouth to speak, but soon close it when I realise a lump has appeared in my throat.
Nikolai moves closer, pressing his hand to my shoulder, grounding me.
His eyes soften as he looks down at me.
“It’s not like you to come to bed so early.”
I take a sharp breath in, eyes darting between both brothers before I swallow hard.
After clearing my throat, I smile at them both.
“I’m fine. I was just thinking.”
Nikolai takes a seat beside me, and so does Mikhail.
“Are you thinking about us?”
Nikolai asks, the edge of a smile tugging at his lips.
“I was thinking about everything.” I whisper. “How is it possible that we got here? After everything that’s been revealed? How did we ever go from all of that…to this?”
Mikhail chuckles softly, leaning down to kiss my forehead.
“We’re here because we’re meant to be, and nothing will ever tear us apart.”
I take another breath in, nodding my head.
I believe him.
I really do.
Nikolai’s hand slides down as he wraps his fingers around mine.
“And that means we’re never letting you go, and we’re never letting anybody take you either.”
I laugh, but it’s soft, and a little breathless too.
I still can’t believe how everything has changed, and how everything has led to this very moment.
I’ve seen the way they protect me, and the way they fight for me.
They’ve made me part of their world, and their future too.
In turn, I’m ready to give them mine.
We don’t need a grand ceremony or a big celebration to know where we stand.
What we have is enough.
What we’ve built is more than enough.
With my fingers still wrapped around Nikolai’s, I lean into Mikhail’s chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
“You’re ours, Chiara. Always. Forever.”
In that moment, I know that I am.
I’m theirs, just as much as they are mine.
Together, we’ve built something beautiful, and something real.
As I close my eyes, I let myself feel it; the peace that comes with belonging.
And finally, I let go of all the uncertainty.
Taking a deep breath in, I open my eyes once more, feeling my heart skip a beat as I notice both pairs of icy blue eyes gazing down at me.
I slip my hand out of Nikolai’s, and I move away from Mikhail.
I feel my body beginning to tremble, because I know that this is the moment.
I’ve been holding it inside for too long, unsure how to say it, but now, I can’t keep it in any longer.
Slowly, I take hold of both their hands, and I inch them closer towards my body.
I move them lower to my stomach where a tiny life resides.
Confusion flickers in their eyes, but something shifts in them soon after.
Realisation dawns on them.
And finally, they understand.
I smile softly, my voice thick with emotion as I speak.
“I’m pregnant.”
I say, the words tumbling out, filled with pure joy as a few happy tears slip down my cheeks too.
For a moment, neither one of them speaks.
Their eyes are locked onto mine, then they move to my stomach, and then to each other.
There’s disbelief in their expressions.
Nikolai’s hand tightens around mine, his eyes never leaving me.
“Are you sure?”
Mikhail finally croaks out, his voice soft, full of wonder and awe, as if he can’t quite grasp the reality of this.
I smile through my tears, nodding at them both.
“I’m sure. I’ve missed my period, and I took three different tests too.”
The tension in their bodies break, and without another word, they both move in, their arms wrapping around my body as they hold me tighter than they ever have before.
I bury my face between their chests, my eyes filling up with tears from the sounds of their racing hearts, as well as the soft whispers of promise that fall from their lips.
“We’ll keep you safe.” Nikolai says, his voice rough with emotion. “And our baby too. I swear it, Chiara.”
Mikhail’s arms only tighten further around my body.
“We’ll love you both with every breath we have. Always.”
I close my eyes, sighing softly as I let the warmth of their embrace settle over me, and the weight of their love wrap all around us.
I feel their joy as it fills every inch of our room.
It’s overwhelming in the best way possible.
My heart swells, and I know that this is everything I’ve ever wanted.
This is my family.
This is where I belong.
The room becomes still, like time itself has paused to let this moment sink in.
They both hold me like I’m the most precious thing in their world, and in some way, I am. I feel it in their every glance, and their every touch. I feel it in the way their hearts beat in sync with mine.
For a moment, I think of everything we’ve been through to get here—the chaos, the pain, the uncertainty—but I know that it doesn’t matter any more. All that matters is now, this specific moment, and the future we’re building together.
Our little family, growing, with love as its foundation.
Looking up at them with my hands pressed to either one of their chests, I feel their steady heartbeats beneath my palms.
Nikolai lifts one hand to gently caress my cheek, his eyes searching mine.
“Our baby will be raised in a world full of love, darling.”
They’re both watching me intently, their expressions soft, but filled with a fierce protectiveness too.
“We’ll be with you both every step of the way, beauty. Every single day.”
Mikhail says, his voice a deep promise.
A soft, content sigh escapes my lips, and I let my eyes flutter shut for a moment.
It feels like everything is finally falling into place.
They have me.
I have them.
And now, we have our precious little baby too.
“I’m so happy.” I whisper, barely able to speak through the lump in my throat as I open my eyes again. “I didn’t think I could ever feel like this…not with the way everything started out.”
They look away from me to look over at each other.
I know they feel it too; the weight of what we’ve all built together.
Mikhail reaches out to brush a stray tear away from my cheek, his thumb gentle against my skin.
“You deserve this happiness, Chiara. You deserve everything. And we’ll give it to you. All of it.”
Nikolai nods in agreement, adding some of his own words too.
“You and our unborn child are the most important people in our lives. Nothing will ever change that, Chiara.”
I smile, feeling my heart overflow with love and gratitude.
“Thank you.”
I murmur softly, though I know that the words don’t quite capture what I’m feeling.
It doesn’t matter though.
They understand.
They always do.
Pulling me close again, they wrap me in their warmth.
Their hands roam my skin, slow and tender, a gentle contrast to the hunger they always seem to carry for me.
It’s different now, not less intense, but softer somehow.
It feels like they’re memorising me all over again, tracing the shape of my body with their fingertips.
Nikolai’s thumb strokes up and down my side as he presses his mouth to the side of my neck, and Mikhail’s lips brush over my temple.
Their warmth seeps into me.
I shift slightly, and their hands adjust with me, never losing contact.
Nikolai’s hand drifts down my thigh, curling around my leg to pull me in even closer.
“Are you okay, Chiara?”
He asks me, his voice soft.
Mikhail’s palm settles low on my belly, his fingers slayed possessively, like he’s already imagining what it will feel like when I’m round with their child.
“Yeah.” I reply, my eyelids becoming heavy, and my body relaxed between theirs. “I’m perfect.”
They both move to kiss me at once.
Nikolai’s mouth finds mine first, kissing me slowly before he pulls back as I turn my head slightly, meeting Mikhail’s lips soon after. We kiss, slowly and unhurriedly, then I turn back to Nikolai, breathing him in.
There’s no rush.
No urgency.
Just the quiet certainty that we belong here, like this together, with each other.
Their hands move again as they each continue kissing me, sharing me with one another, loving me in a way so sweet.
I know I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
Between them.
Always.
Forever.
