Chapter 5 Love Lives Here

Love Lives Here

The porch light cast a warm golden glow across the front yard as Anna Brooks parked her county SUV in front of the David home.

For a long moment, no one moved.

Tan sat quietly in the backseat, his little fingers wrapped around the worn ear of his stuffed panda. He stared through the window at the house before him.

It looked different from every place he had stayed since losing his family.

There were flowers growing beneath the front windows.

A porch swing gently rocked in the summer breeze.

Wind chimes softly played somewhere overhead.

Laughter drifted from inside the house.

Not yelling.

Not arguing.

Laughing.

The sound felt unfamiliar now.

Anna glanced back at him with a gentle smile.

"Ready?"

Tan looked down at the panda.

"I scared."

"I know."

She reached back and squeezed his tiny hand.

"But you won't be alone."

She stepped out of the SUV.

Before Anna could even open Tan's door, Terrence was already walking down the sidewalk with that same calm smile the little boy remembered from the day they met.

He wasn't wearing his police uniform tonight.

Instead, he wore jeans, a Los Angeles Dodgers T-shirt, and old tennis shoes.

Without the badge, he looked less like a police officer and more like someone's dad.

Tan couldn't stop staring.

Terrence crouched beside the open door.

"Hey there, buddy."

Tan's eyes slowly lifted.

"You came."

"I told you I would."

Those five simple words settled deep inside the little boy's heart.

Promises had been broken before.

This one hadn't.

Terrence held out his hand.

"Are you ready to come inside?"

Tan looked toward Anna.

She nodded encouragingly.

"It's okay."

Slowly...

Very slowly...

Tan slipped his tiny hand into Terrence's.

Terrence gently helped him climb out of the SUV.

The little hand immediately tightened around his own.

As though letting go might make everything disappear again.

Terrence didn't mind.

He simply smiled.

"We've been waiting for you."

Standing at the front door was Eva.

The moment she saw Tan, her face softened.

"Oh, sweetheart."

She knelt until they were eye level.

"I'm so happy to see you again."

Tan studied her for a second before quietly asking,

"...Hospital lady?"

Eva laughed softly.

"That's me."

"You pretty."

Terrence grinned.

"I've been trying to tell her that for years."

Eva playfully nudged her husband.

"Behave."

For the first time in weeks...

A tiny giggle escaped Tan.

Everyone heard it.

Everyone smiled.

Behind Eva peeked two curious children.

A little boy with bright brown eyes stepped forward first.

"I'm Travis."

He proudly held up a toy police car.

"My daddy catches bad guys."

Terrence chuckled.

"Sometimes."

Travis looked at Tan.

"You wanna play with me?"

Tan blinked.

No one had asked him to play in a very long time.

Before he could answer, another tiny face appeared from behind Eva's leg.

Four-year-old Ella clutched a pink stuffed bunny nearly as worn as Tan's panda.

She smiled shyly.

"I'm Ella."

She noticed the panda immediately.

"I got Bunny."

Tan looked down at his toy.

"I got Panda."

Ella smiled wider.

"They friends."

Tan looked at the bunny.

Then at his panda.

A small smile slowly spread across his face.

"They friends."

The front door opened wider.

An older gentleman with kind eyes stepped outside.

His silver hair peeked from beneath an old baseball cap.

Harold David extended his hand toward Tan.

"Well now."

"So you're the young man everybody's been talking about."

Tan looked uncertain.

Terrence smiled.

"This is my dad."

Harold winked.

"You can call me Grandpa Harold if you want."

Tan's eyes widened.

Grandpa.

The word stirred memories of another elderly face...

His own grandfather.

A man who used to let him ride on his shoulders during Chinese New Year parades.

For just a second...

His smile disappeared.

Harold noticed immediately.

He didn't push.

Instead, he simply patted Tan gently on the shoulder.

"We're mighty glad you're here."

Then another woman appeared carrying an apron dusted with flour.

Gloria David.

Her warm smile reminded Tan of sunshine.

She walked directly toward him.

"Oh, look at this precious baby."

Before anyone could react, she gently wrapped him in the softest hug.

Not too tight.

Just enough.

Tan froze.

He couldn't remember the last time someone hugged him like that.

No anger.

No impatience.

Just love.

Gloria slowly released him.

"I made peach cobbler."

She smiled proudly.

"And fried chicken."

Harold laughed.

"Now, Gloria..."

"You know that's gonna spoil him."

She looked at Tan.

"Do you like fried chicken?"

He hesitated.

"I never had it."

The entire family looked at one another.

Terrence smiled.

"Well..."

"I guess tonight's your lucky night."

Inside the David home, everything felt different.

The floors were clean.

Family photographs lined the walls.

Soft gospel music played quietly from the kitchen radio while something delicious baked in the oven.

The air smelled like butter, cinnamon, and fresh bread.

Tan slowly turned in a circle.

There were no insects.

No overflowing trash.

No yelling.

No fear.

Only warmth.

Only peace.

Gloria noticed him looking around.

"What do you think?"

He answered honestly.

"It pretty."

Eva smiled.

"This is home."

The word slipped out before she thought about it.

Everyone grew quiet.

She quickly looked at Anna.

"I'm sorry."

Anna smiled gently.

"You don't have to apologize."

She looked at Tan.

"I think every child deserves to hear that."

After dinner, Travis insisted on showing Tan every toy in his bedroom.

"This one's Batman."

"This one's Spider-Man."

"And this one shoots real water."

"Mom says only outside."

Ella climbed onto the rug beside them.

"My bunny wanna meet Panda."

She carefully sat the pink bunny beside Tan's stuffed panda.

The two children burst into laughter as Ella made the bunny "hop" toward the panda.

For the first time since the immigration raid...

Tan laughed without forcing himself.

The sound drifted down the hallway.

Eva stopped washing dishes.

Terrence looked up from drying a plate.

Neither spoke.

They simply listened.

It was the sweetest sound either of them had heard in weeks.

Eva quietly wiped away a tear.

"I've missed that laugh."

Terrence slipped an arm around her shoulders.

"So have I."

Later that night, Anna finished the emergency placement paperwork at the kitchen table.

She stood and gathered her folder.

"I should get going."

Eva walked her to the front door.

"Thank you."

"No."

She smiled.

"Thank you."

She looked back toward the living room.

Tan had fallen asleep on the couch.

His head rested against Terrence's side.

One little hand still held the stuffed panda.

The other had unconsciously wrapped itself around Terrence's arm.

As though even in sleep...

He was afraid this family might disappear too.

Anna smiled.

"I've placed a lot of children over the years."

She looked at Terrence and Eva.

"I don't think I've ever felt this much peace leaving one behind."

After she drove away, the house grew quiet.

Terrence looked down at the sleeping little boy.

Carefully, he brushed a strand of black hair away from Tan's forehead.

"So little."

"So much pain."

Eva rested her head against her husband's shoulder.

"He doesn't have to carry it by himself anymore."

Terrence nodded.

"No."

"He doesn't."

Outside, the porch light continued to glow against the summer night.

Inside...

For the first time since losing everything...

Tan Lee slept without fear.

And although none of them realized it yet, the little boy who had arrived as an emergency placement had already begun to find something he thought had been lost forever.

A family.
