Chapter 9

HANNAH

Hannah walked into the precinct with a hangover from the night before.

She stayed with Rahim until the wee hours of the morning, taking shots and having sex that left her barely walking.

With each step she had taken her knees felt like they would give out any moment.

She lied and told Angelo she was called in and ended up going undercover at a bar.

She wanted to make sure she covered her ass in case he smelled liquor reeking from her pores.

The way she was feeling she almost called off but the Sergeant called requesting her to come in.

She walked straight to his office, nearly able to stand. When she walked inside, he gave her this estranged look that told her something wasn't right.

"Mrs. Sharief." he sighed and this confirmed.

Hannah didn't bother uttering a single word. She took a seat and waited for him to look up at her. Whatever he was reading had his undivided attention. Hannah knew that the form was the reason he called and something in her gut told her exactly what it was.

"I'm afraid I'm gonna have to terminate you."

"Terminate me? Why would I be terminated?"

"Hannah, you tested positive for MDMA." Sergeant looked up at her, very disappointed.

"That's not possible. I don't do drugs."

"As an officer, illegal drug use is considered inconsistent with the duties and public trust placed in law enforcement.

With this kind of behavior, I'll have Internal Affair all over my ass.

" He shook his head. He hated having to let Hannah go because not only was she dedicated he liked her work ethics.

This actually took him by surprise because she had visited many occasions at his home and she'd barely drink.

"There gotta be something you can do." Hannah gave him a pleading look.

"Well, if you want you could appeal it. They may offer or mandate substance abuse counseling or enrollment in a treatment program. If that happens, you'll be required to complete the program and pass follow-up tests before returning to duty."

"I can't do any of that. What will I tell Angelo?" Oh my God, there has to be something else."

"I'm sorry. Appealing it in hopes they give you the classes is the only option."

"Noooo. No. No. No. I'm not taking that."

"Well methamphetamine was found. It's not like it was marijuana.

Because marijuana is legal now in California, they don't sweat it as much. Because you were irresponsible you have to suffer the consequences. Again, I’m sorry.

" he dismissed her with a slight shoulder shrug.

He reached for the document and handed it to her.

She rudely snatched it from his hand but knowing she was upset Sergeant didn't sweat it.

He watched her storm out of the door wishing he could help her.

Again, he liked Hannah but she had to accept and deal with the consequences she brought on herself.

***

After a few hours of sitting by the Marcauthor pound, Hannah had finally built up enough courage to head home.

She wasn't sure what she would tell Angelo and it's not like she could keep the secret because he worked hand and hand with law enforcement. She was sure the rumor had already surfaced around both the station and fire department but because he was home, she knew he hadn’t heard.

She climbed out of the car and walked into her home.

She knew he was probably asleep because he got off work at 4AM.

When she walked in, the house was tranquil and the sound of the music she had left playing, played in the living room.

The smell of toast lingered in the air too freshly so she knew he had gotten up to make himself something to eat.

Hannah tried hard to tiptoe down the hall but luck had prevailed her.

"Hey sweet heart." Angelo called from the kitchen table. Hannah stopped walking and froze in one spot. "What you doing back so soon?

"I ummm. My hangover was too much." She thought quickly walking into the kitchen.

“I definitely understand. You have to watch how much you drink on these cases. Can you eat something?”

“No, no I might get queasy.” She clutched her stomach.

“Well let me make you some coffee.” He insisted then stood from his seat. Hannah took a seat and waited for Angelo to make the coffee.

“Here you go Kindal.” They both chuckled. Angelo actually loved the fake name she’d go by during her bust.

Because Angelo didn’t seem to suspicious Hannah made up her mind to not volunteer the information.

She was gonna wait and see if she could come up with something a little less seductive.

Right now, she felt like a complete slut.

Just watching Angelo’s handsome face sitting across from her made her feel like shit once again.

Right now she just wanted to go lay down but she felt like she owed him this time.
